Spying: 2015 Corvette Z06 Goes Out For A Drive

Just a couple days after Chevrolet announced that 2015 Corvette Z06 will debut at the Detroit Auto Show, the fine folks at Automobile Magazine got their hands on some new spy shots of a Z06 mule undergoing some testing.

Now the pictures reveal some information that we have known about since Chevrolet showed off a teaser shot such as the enlarged brakes, the unique black multispoke wheels, and air vents on the fenders to keep the brakes cool.

One item that is very notable is a raised hood, possibly bulge or scoop. A source tells Automobile that the Z06 could be packing a supercharged version of the Stingray's 6.2L V8, hence the raised hood. Called LT4, this new engine could pack between 600 to 650 horsepower. Now there are two other engines in the running as well. Previous rumors have said the Z06 will use an updated version of the 7.0L V8 or a turbocharged V8 of some kind.

The front end features some changes as well, mostly for improved cooling and aero.

    Personally I think we'll see a supercharged engine in both Z06 and ZR1... Two different tunes would work well and GM could even, eventually (just speculating here), bring back the LT5 designation for the ZR1 engine...

    A twin-turbo, small displacement, DOHC V8 was never really in the cards... and if it did won't have out performed the LT4 from a power-to-mass, power-to-volume, power-to-cost or simply power standpoint. Besides, there is an immediacy to a supercharged or naturally aspirated engine's power delivery that cannot be matched with exhaust driven pressurization systems.

    Isn't there rumor that the ZR-1 was a one and done? If so I could see them making a 600 hp Z06 to fill that void. Looks like an 8-speed is finally coming too, only 8 years behind Toyota/Lexus but better late than never.

    Well, GM, took the long hard road of developing their own. Bankruptcy or not, they could have had an 8-speed in service four years ago if they have simply sourced an Aisin or ZF box. That is what they ended up doing anyway to get the 8-speed into the CTS. But, had they done that across the board the GM transmission group would not have a next generation product and would be redundant in a few years.
