  • A Range Rover Competitor from Jeep?

Jeep is looking to move upmarket to compete with the likes of the Range Rover.

FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne said last weekend at the opening of a Alfa Romeo and Maserati dealership near Toronto that brand is missing an opportunity.

“When I see a Range Rover on the street, my blood boils, because we should be able to do a thing like that. And we will,” said Marchionne.

At the moment, the most expensive Jeep is the Grand Cherokee which tops off at $48,795 for the Summit w/o options. Jeep is working a three-row model that will be coming out in 2016 - possibly named the Grand Wagoneer.

Marchionne declined to provide any other details about the vehicle, partly due to the model not being on the current five-year plan.

“Would I tell you that?. No, but we’re working on it now.”

Also.. the JGC Summit is pretty darn close to Land Rover levels... put some nicer wood and better materials in it, make the transmission knob retract and call it a day.

uhm... isn't that a job for Maserati

Yeah. That's what I'm wondering here...

I get what you guys mean as Maserati has the luxury level that if they build a competent SUV they should compete with Land Rover, but Jeep could bring the off road toughness to a competitor of Land Rover that Maserati could not bring.

So many around here say Land Rover are the worlds best off road luxury SUV's, I believe Jeep could beat them at that game.

Dimensionally GC is within inches of the RR except for the length. It has bigger interior volume and engines that can out perform the RR in many forms. Offroad capability and value-wise it is superior and so with respect to reliability and build-quality.

What is Mariachi really looking for in a LR competitor? Perception or raping the consumers for more money?

You already do, Sergio. Get to know your products better.

I see a 2 pronged approach opportunity: Jeep with the brash American take on the idea, Maserati with the Italian flair approach...

They'll fail at this, who wants a $100,000 Jeep?   The Range Rover has old world name recognition and badge snobery, plus it a proven off road warrior, even if most of the owners will never take it off road.   Maserati wouldn't have any off road or SUV credentials, if they make a Maserati SUV (which I think they are) I would guess it more like a Porsche Macan sort of car.

I wonder is Sergio sees a Toyota Camry or VW Golf on the street and says" that makes my blood boil, we should be able to build a car as good as that."

I have to say that Range Rover only has Old World Name recognition and proven off road warrior in the UK and some Europe areas. The Range Rover / Land Rovers are garbage that consistently breaks down and I see more on the side of the roads and in the shop than I see jeeps. Their product line truly sales only to inner city Badge Snobs as real world off road users want a Jeep, GM, Ford or Ram for their 4x4's. In fact I can honestly say I never see them in the mountains, at the ski resorts or anywhere but in the inner city on the west coast.

Terrible build quality & engineering do not a luxury experience make. Range Rover has consistently been on the bottom of quality lists, and for years; JLR seems unwilling to address the problem. No doubt there are many who are fed up with poor reliability of RR and would readily look at a top shelf JGC as a fresh alternative.

Jeeps are for totally different customers, unless you count the posers...

Having Jeep do the vehicle also adds thousands of dealers to sell out of..compared to Maserati.. Even if they are as unreliable as a Rover, at least they could be taken almost anywhere.
