By William Maley

January 24, 2013

Car Magazine is reporting that the next-generation GLK, due out in 2016, will spawn a three-door coupe model to compete with the new Porsche Macan. Internally known as the GLC, the model will share a sleek and stylish body as the GLK. Both models will also premiere a new, rear-wheel drive platform, codenamed MRA.

The GLC will come with a variety of engines, including a variety of gas and diesels. There is also talk of a AMG version.

Lame, but people will buy it because they want SUV-coupes. Just think the 2-door Blazer was about 20 years ahead of it's time, it is all the rage now.

I dunno, I really like the Evoque 2-door. If I hit the lottery, it would totally be the CR-V's replacement.

Mazda gave up the rights to 'GoodLittleCar' ?

The Evoque looks good in both 2 door or 4 door. I'd say it is the best looking SUV on the market right now. The GLK is pretty ugly looking.

The 'Gulk'...

Wonder if mercedees is going to follow Cadillac with stronger A&S styling on the next 'Gulk', too.

They need some style as does BMW. They both have become a bit stale in the last 10 years.

Well I always liked the squared-off current GLK, it is elegant, imo.

So glad to hear it will continue to be based on a RWD chassis.

I wish GM would produce a 2-door SUV.

Did you catch the part where this is the next generation GLK?

Yes I did, but Mercedes often does small changes to styling and not big ones. The GLK needs proportions and styling changed, but maybe they will scrap the current GLK and start fresh. I think the ML and GL look fine, there is only so much you can do with an SUV.

A small Caddy based off the Encore in this space would be interesting, in 5dr and 3dr form..

it's an all new platform.

I think Cadillac would be better off with a new Delta platform CUV that is coming and then SRX moving to something alpha platform based.

There should be an Alpha platform SUV, since the GLK and X3 are rear drive. That would make a better small crossover from a driving standpoint. Making a midsize FWD suv for $35k though sells to the sheeple.

Plenty of sheeple buy BMWs (and believe they're FWD) - it's how BMW exists.
