  • Uhh, we're not sure about that front end

In a couple of weeks, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles will roll out the 2019 Ram 1500 at the Detroit Auto Show. Before this, a fresh stack of spy photos have made their way online revealing the front end.

The biggest change is Ram dropping the oversize, rectangular grille that has been a key part of their trucks for a number of years. In its place is a hexagonal grille with a narrow bar and 'RAM' name.  We're thinking this could be one of a range of different grille inserts for the truck. There are square headlights featuring some sort of LED lighting. The rest of the front looks to be an evolution of the current model.

From a previous report, we're possibly expecting some sort of split tailgate for the rear, along with the return of the RamBox storage system.

I have to say I have mixed feeling about the new front end as I think they took away the love it or hate it look for a more streamlined aerodynamic gas saving look. Almost jelly bean style that I really do not like.

I see autoblog has a video of someone using magnets on the sides, hood, etc. No magnetism at all so they either have gone fully aluminum on the bed, body panels, hood, doors, etc. or some form of carbon fiber as there seems to be no steel in that 2019 truck.

Gonna be interesting to see what they show off and reveal about the powertrain at the Detroit show.

'hey guys for this new model, you know how everyone knows the crosshair and its brand identity? let's have none of that!'

The RAM badge looks a bit small, thought they would fill the entire grille opening with it.

Whoever said it was a good idea to do away with the crosshair grille should be told to clean out their desk.

After 30 years, it was a very strong brand styling cue..should have kept it...at least they toned down the ugliness of the current 'RAM' logo grille.

It's kinda sad...the RAM on the grill ruins what is a nice looking truck....

I like parts of the front end...it needed changes after having close to the same shape front end for 20+ years, the that stupid piece of the grill.....

It looks like an F-150 and a Silverado had a wild night.

Being from Ohio, I am quite proud that Vinton county provided both Meth and pot for the wild night...and apparently a bride to wake up under.

I think a different kind of cross hairs might be in order.  Maybe we could pretend it is a Toyota driven by ISIS?

If you fired everyone incompetent at FCA Auburn Hills would be as much in abandonment as the rest of Detroit.

Honestly, I will wait until it debuts.  like Ford and Chevy i am sure there will be different grills avail.  I just hope it isn't like the 15 Chevy where one detail, the funky curved line at the front, completely ruins it for me.

You can see what I am talking about and that front end isn't exactly causing me to rave either.

Obviously it's a beat-up a bit (body below the headlights is overhanging the bumper), but I think it looks fine in general. I like it better than the 'horseshoe' Ram grille on some of the current trucks. Ram has a solid track record over the last 10 years of really cohesive designs (just not in all trims).

I would have voted to keep/evolve the crosshair grille, but I would have also voted to keep it a "Dodge" Ram.

As far as powertrain, they know which side their bread is buttered on.

Very good looking truck from this perspective.

Ram 1/2T has been the nicest of the Big 3 truck, as far as styling goes, IMO, for pretty much this past decade.
Interesting to reflect, I believe sales were less than what the Tundra does now- back in '93, the year before the Big Rig look everyone has been doing since. Under 100K units. I believe last year the Ram did 500K units.
I'm certainly intrigued by the Silverado tho- stepped outside the box it appears.

The 6 sided trapezoid grille is a common styling cue nowadays--esp. with Ford and Hyundai, and some Toyotas.

...and genesis, audi, lexus, fiat, mini, mercedes, Buick, Chevrolet, etc.

Once EVERY vehicle front fascia went to 'angry' angled headlights, IE: angled inner edges, there's only so much you can do with the grille shape between them.

Automotive design is 90 years old, in reality AND in human years.

Or This 2018 GMC:

I take the GMC over the Ram.

No-Brainer. GMC. It's a good looking truck AND the Ram is a bad looking truck, so far.
