Lack of Information Has Model 3 Reservation Holders Anxious

Hundred of thousands of people plopped down $1,000 to reserve a Tesla Model 3 last year. At the time, buyers were told not to expect their Model 3 until the end of 2018. Since then, buyers haven't been told a thing. When will their vehicle arrive? What options will be available? What will be the final price? None of these questions have been answers and some now are looking for answers.

Bloomberg spoke with some people that dropped $1,000 deposit to get on the Model 3 reservation list. All of the people in the story want more information and hope they get some answers this Friday as Tesla will be holding an event to hand over the Model 3s to the first 30 customers.

The lack of information received from Tesla “makes me 100 percent more nervous,” said Patrick Herrity, a 34-year-old business consultant in Virginia who made his Model 3 reservation online. He said he understands the company is being secretive to ward off competitors but hopes this week’s event will shed more light on his next ride.

What Herrity wants is a fully-loaded Model 3 with all-wheel drive and a sunroof -- options that won’t be available in the first cars to roll off the assembly line in Fremont, California. Musk has said the Model 3 will initially be built with the simplest design, unlike the feature-heavy Model X sport utility, which was plagued by early production problems.

One key bit of information many buyers would like to know is where they fall on the reservation list. The U.S. begins to phase out $7,500 federal tax credit for electric vehicles once an automaker has sold 200,000 vehicles. Tesla is hoping to produce 20,000 Model 3s by the end of the year. If this holds, Bloomberg projects that Tesla will cross this threshold sometime next year, leaving some buyers with a more expensive proposition.

    This is the same consumer base that was confused by the fact that this was not the replacement for the Model S despite an abundance of information not saying anything of the sort.

    At one point I remember them showing 340,000 reservations and now maybe 40,000 will get the $7,500 write off from the GOV.

    200,000 Canceled Reservations! 50,000 reduced feature buys and 50,000 hard core loyalist that will wait till they can buy fully loaded AWD Tesla 3.

    The O/P is exactly what I've said on this board, back when the 400K pre-orders were topical discussion.

    That there is a very real & tangible gap between what people are envisioning in the void of information, and the hard reality that is going to show up when deliveries start : very few options, no power upgrades, higher pricing, lesser rebates, and the delay in filling orders.

    Time will tell.

    Tesla needs to learn how to mass produce cars and they need to learn fast.  They have good ideas, the solar panel roof, power wall and all the live off renewable energy stuff sounds great in theory.  But they have to deliver the goods.

    If they can't get their production up to scale, then the Germans will wipe them out.  And if Toyota gets into EV's in scale look out because they know how to manufacture.

    No, Elon Musk needs to sell Tesla to an existing auto concern because Tesla is not delivering anywhere near what he promised.

    I have respect for the genius of Elon Musk, but when you take away the smoke and mirrors of hype and green subsidies, the brand is not doing well. The cars aren't reliable, they can't get out of their own way to release new models, and the old models are barely warmed over with minor refreshes and updated battery packs.

    Some of these orders, the peeps with the anxieties, said they may upgrade to Model S or Model X...

    My buddy in AZ with the Volt thought about it, but at the time Tesla wasn't taking orders from Arizona (not sure why).   He is buying a Bolt instead to replace the family hauler (a well-worn '01 Focus wagon).

    Well....he does not have to wait for it. So yeah...good on him!!!

    And I guess he was satisfied with the Volt that the Bolt makes even more sense!!!

    The Model 3 is $35,000 base before tax credits.  220 mile range, 0-60 in 5.6 seconds.  Elon delivered.  The Bolt is done, it doesn't look good, it is slower with similar range, it costs more, and it is Chevy while the other one is a Tesla, possibly the desired brand in cars, and maybe even outside of cars.

    It will be interesting to see if any Model 3s actually sell for $35k...the article I saw indicated the typical price with options will be more like $45k.  And the 30 'delivered' yesterday were sold to Tesla employees, so not really out in the market yet with real people.

    I think $45k will be common because the luxury package is $5k, and Auto pilot is $5k.  So that puts it at $45k which still seems like a good deal.   A Bolt Premier with the driver package and infotainment package is about $43k and it is a smaller, slower car and doesn't have Super Cruise.

     If you don't care about autonomous driving though, you can get the luxury package and the bigger battery, have a car that goes 310 miles and does 0-60 in 5.1 seconds for $49k.   That is a heck of a deal and without the tax credit.

    I'm curious how the production interior actually looks..the only pics I've seen so far, it looks very minimalist.
