DETROIT (AP) - The United Auto Workers union isn't negotiating with auto supplier Delphi Corp. but began talking with General Motors Corp. two weeks ago about a possible deal that could avert a strike at Delphi, the UAW's top GM negotiator said Tuesday. UAW vice-president Richard Shoemaker said Delphi has only talked to the union twice since it filed for bankruptcy in October, when it gave the union two different wage proposals. The UAW rejected both proposals, which would have cut production workers'wages from $27 US an hour to $12.50 US an hour or lower. Shoemaker said the UAW hasn't offered its own wage proposal. General Motors to nearly triple number of cars it produces in India Media Release Dec. 13, 2005 General Motors Corp. said Tuesday it plans to nearly triple the number of cars it produces in India to meet growing demand in the South Asian country. The announcement came just weeks after the company said it would slash 30,000 jobs and scale back production in the United States. GM had earlier announced plans to increase production in India from more than double the 25,000 cars a year it currently produces in the country. Lawrence Burns, vice president for research and development, said Tuesday that the number of vehicles made here would eventually reach 80,000. However…

That is some CRAZY undercutting on the TB though - can't believe they are still floundering.

The only reason that I have been able to come up with as to why GM would delay/cancel the NG Malibu and ION (both of which were supposed to be awesome -- and we know the ION was) is that now they're concentrating on the several new crossovers they have planned. I remember a discussion a while back in which our insiders told us that GM thinks crossovers are going to be the key to the future. While getting ahead of the game in an expanding market is good, does GM just expect it's current sedan buyers to make the move to X-Overs when they find out the sedans GM offers in 3 years are the same ones it offers now? Are the HV V6s used anywhere other than North America? Wouldn't it be easier (and save costs) to produce millions of HF V6s globally and use them in everything that needs a V6? I'm not starting this thread to necessarily put down the HV V6s, but the HF V6s are clearly better and it seems the only reason for GM not putting them in more cars is cost. Trojan Horse At GM's Door by Rick Ackerman Thursday, Dec 08 What the heck could GM investors be thinking? A surge in the stock late yesterday cut the DJIA’s losses nearly in half, but you’d have to be a cynic to believe the celebration was warranted. The news that caused GM shares to rise 2.9 percent in mere minutes concerned the growing likelihood that Kirk Kerkorian, a 9.9% stakeholder, will get a seat on GM’s board. Kerkorian’s hatchet-man, Jerome York, managed to squeeze impressive tribute from Chrysler when he was installed on that company’s board a decade ago, but the auto manufacturers were on the threshold of a cyclical upswing then that eventually turned…

According to the experts on Wall Street, the automaker must do a lot more than just cutting 30,000 jobs and idling 12 plants in North America, which the automaker announced this week. Not until GM gets rid of at least one of its eight U.S. brands, weathers difficulties at its largest parts supplier, Delphi, and forces its unions into more concessions will the automaker win back favor with investors, they say. They also want GM to cut more of its manufacturing capacity. In other words,…

This is a long a term strategy and may be the thing needed to make GM cars wanted by the public again. I think that GM needs to bring the Holden and Opel nameplates to N. America. I don't wanna get rid of Buick, Pontiac, or Saturn, but I think the names need to be changed. Pontiacs and Buicks are just not in people's minds anymore when they think of buying a car. They are not considered 'cool' cars to own. If GM brings over those 2 new nameplates, I really think GM could make more sales. After all, those would be considered import autos, even though they're GM. When you tell someone you bought a new Buick or Pontiac, you shouldn't have to …

For the first time in its history, General Motors Corp. is now selling more cars and trucks in other countries than it does in the United States, GM Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Rick Wagoner told the Free Press. This historic shift reflects both GM's dwindling share of the mature U.S. market and its promising position in China and other fast-growing Asian economies. But despite strong sales growth overseas, Wagoner stressed that GM's future still depends largely on whether he can reverse huge losses in the North American auto market, where GM has lost $4.8 billion so far this year, triggering a plunge in its stock price and downgrades of its deb…

Would scare tactics work for GM in marketing...? If GM had a commerical that really depicted the premium reasons to purchase an american vehicle. If they, in a comercial, analized the affects of a detriotless america... could they score peoples purchasing? Could they really hit people by saying, "In efforts to compete, with the competition, we had to lay off 30,000 americans." "Toyota says they want to help General Motors by raising their profits and making themselves less competive." Size is key. General Motors expects 2005 Middle East sales of its nine-seat GMC and Chevrolet Suburbans and its lumbering GMC Yukon and Chevy Tahoe to soar to 51% over last year, pushed by frantic sales in the biggest regional market - Saudi Arabia. General Motors, Ford and Nissan all reported big October sales declines in America last week, with four-wheel-drives taking the biggest hit. Sales of the Ford Explorer, Lincoln Navigator, GMC Yukon, Hummer H2 and Toyota Land Cruiser were all down by 50% or more. High oil prices were cited as a chief reason. But in one of the auto industry's great ironies, the same oil price rise is driving four-wheel-drive fever in…

DETROIT - The financial safety net that cushions General Motors Corp. union workers during downturns, a program called the jobs bank, could be targeted for elimination just as the company seeks to cut 30,000 jobs. GM's plans outlined Monday to stop production at 10 U.S. facilities will increase only the number of autoworkers in the jobs bank, experts who follow the industry said. Under the program, initially agreed to with the UAW in contract negotiations in 1984, the three Detroit automakers pay hourly workers full wages and benefits even when a plant has closed or production stops. The companies agreed to the program so the UAW wouldn't fight new measures …

November 16, 2005 As General Motors’ stock sank to its lowest level in 18 years on Wednesday, the troubled automaker turned to green technology for hope, pledging to undercut the competition when it introduces a hybrid version of the Saturn VUE next summer. “We think it will be the most affordable hybrid on the market,” Susan Garavaglia, manager of communications for GM’s powertrain division, said at a meeting in San Francisco. “Hopefully, we’re going to be opening up the hybrid market to more consumers.” GM was late to the hybrid game, making its first passenger …

Plunging market share, huge layoffs and a copycat filing by Ford. Those are just a few of the likely outcomes if GM can't avoid bankruptcy court. By Robert Walberg Rick Wagoner, chief executive of General Motors, has tried to comfort investors by saying GM has no plans to file for bankruptcy protection. Cold comfort, I'd say. The company's deeds, if not the CEO's words, point to an acute need for some sort of bankruptcy plan, even if just as a contingency. Consider: GM (GM, news, msgs) lost nearly $4 billion over the last year; its credit rating dropped to junk status; car sales plunged as GM built bigger cars and trucks just as gas prices s…

GM's Collapsing Ladder By Eugene Robinson Friday, November 25, 2005 It's sad to watch General Motors fall apart like a rusty old Malibu, and not just because so many workers are losing their jobs. When I was growing up in the '60s, GM was more than just an icon of American capitalism, more than just the company that made and sold half the nation's automobiles. General Motors gave me my first schematic diagram of the American dream. These days we'd call the GM strategy an exercise in market segmentation, but back then I would have called it "moving on up." With its five distinct lines of passenger cars, GM created a climbable staircase of …

Its plant closures should address that and allow GM to stop diverting resources it can't afford to vehicles it doesn't need. Barring some miracle — such as a car that really clicks with consumers — General Motors Corp. is facing a future with no pleasant options. The least painful would be drastic downsizing, which means axing whole divisions like Pontiac and Buick, not just closing a few plants as it announced this week. It also might go into Chapter 11 or sell itself off in pieces, if anyone will buy. This is a woeful tale indeed, but it also comes with a sense of inevitability. The automaker will launch about 15 new vehicles next year: A new family of large SUVs, three "crossover" vehicles, a new Saturn roadster and sedan and the next generation of its full-size pickups. The new vehicles -- designed to shore up GM's strongholds and grab share of growing segments -- are critical to Chairman Rick Wagoner's comeback strategy. To quell doubts about its future, GM has allowed dealers, journalists and key analysts to…
