Easing the pain

I know I'm getting ahead of things, but I can't help thinking about the next "toy" I'll get after the Hawk is gone. Station wagon, 2-door Tahoe, El Camino...

I'd really like to find something interesting and low-buck, you know, guilt-free cool.

I really want to pump up the fun-per-dollar factor this go round. It could be a get in and drive cruiser, a project, even a curiosity.

I just want something I can enjoy without breaking the bank. And, I'd like to be able to haul the pups around in it without worrying about them trashing it.

Focus wagon ...no seriosly ... :)

sub $20k, 37mpg, still the best FWD chasis on the market (better than my mazda3), 40 cu ft of space, Made in Wayne, MI ... the interior sucks, but if you really hate it, you can drop in the pre 2005 interior - plus the aftermarket for the dura engines is growing .. we have first turbos, some bore and stroker kits ...

I know it is a FWD and 4banger ... but if you want practicality, fun and low pricetag, there is very little to compare to it (unless you consider a Mazdaspeed3's cca$25k sticker still low enough 8) )

I guess I should have laid out the parameters a bit better.

I don't want anything new or newish, no FWD, no sedans. V8 power required - I'm more concerned with purchase/project price than I am with operating expenses. This will be an occasional cruiser, not a daily driver.

But, it has to be interesting in some way.

I guess I'm just sifting through the last 40+ years of cars to see what catches my eye. I'd like to keep it simple, so no orphans (Studebaker,AMC...) and with good parts availability (GM most likely). I'd also like to have a big block V8, but maybe in an unconventional (non-musclecar) application. If something else that doesn't follow the rules hits me right, I think I can be flexible.

You know, it could even be something weird. Like say, an '83 Cutlass wagon with an LS1 conversion.

Just thinking out loud. :AH-HA_wink:

Still on the Yukon GT prowl?

Yeah, saw a nice older one in a local car rag. Pre-vortec TBI though.

Thanks for the link Satty. Very cool site, they a huge inventory.

I think I'll pass on the limo though, my pups don't rate that sort of transport.

I am totally in love with the '72 and '73 Catalina coupes they've got.

That little wagon is one car that deserves to sell much better than it does.

I truly believe that gasoline will be $5.00/gallon within a few years, and that is the one car that would keep me in the Ford family.

E-bay is the best place to find old station wagons for sale. If I were mechanically inclined, I would love to buy a big, relatively low mileage station wagon from the late 1960's or 1970's.

Chevelle Stationwagon for the win!!!

At least thats what I would look for :)

Yup!

That's fast becoming the main object of my search, the dark green one on the site Satty linked to is a good possibility- if it is still around when the time comes.

Found a 1960 Olds Dynamic 88 4 door, solid body, interior needs attention, motor removed this weekend... Located in Texas.

You could make cash on the side by taking high schoolers to prom then driving out to the middle of nowhere and robbing them on the way back. Or not. They do have a lot of cool stuff. Back when I was considering getting an older car to resotre I checked their website a lot hoping an old Corvair or Mustang would com in cheap. They had a few but nothing I coul bring myself to pull the trigger on. They even have a few now I could see myself cruising in, a couple of '78 Lincoln Mark Vs, an International Scout II, some rough condition (or worse) Rancheros, and this:

They've also got a Studebaker Lark wagon, kooky looking, me gusta.

How about (just for $hits and giggles) a 1978-84 Malibu Wagon...?

Stuff an LS6 with 6-speed out of a totalled Z06 & you're cooking! :D

I should go get a look at that. It's not a 2-door is it?

For $1850, if it weren't for the baby on the way and having just bought a new car I'd seriously consider it.

Black leather buckets, refurbished red dash, jet black paint job, all new chrome, subtle red pinstripe......
