I was wondering how some of you feel about the pb oil...(wal-mart, auto zone)

All the same?

Prefer the major brands?

I posted this question on another site, and got some pretty interesting responses...

Also-does anyone know of a site that gives the makers of the private brands?

Like Wal-Mart and Quaker State/Penzoil....

well, as someone who works for an auto parts store I have to say that our CarQuest branded oil is Valvoline, just without the white bottle and high price tag. When I was at AutoZone, if I remember right, their PB oil was made by either Kendall or Exxon/Mobil.

Hmm...I thought Kendall was made by someone too....

If CQ's oil is valvoline, that would be a good deal...

CQ's oil is produced and marketed by the Ashland Corp, same people who bottle Valvoline, and every time we get new information about our oil, it always comes as "Valvoline has added this new product to our Car Quest Oil..." So yeah, its a steal, considering Valvoline is about 3.00 a quart here and our CQ-branded oil is only about 1.60 a quart.

It's the house brand for the local fleet supply place, Fleet Farm. I know they wouldn't just bottle it for one store, so I think someone else makes it.

fleet farm is big....like 30 some stores so it might be bottled just for them.

Vavoline all-season, maybe?

The easiest way to cheat and see who the oil is made by is to read the product label on the back of the bottle. Like on the back of our CQ oil is says "bottled by Ashland Corp" which is how I know its Valvoline.

Is it true that AutoZone is owned by Wal*Mart?

Yes, Wal Mart has a significant amount of stock in AutoZone.....which is also why they are no longer hiring parts people, but just warm bodies (at least around here), and cramming the store full of crap they don't need, like hats and t-shirts.

Now that I didn't know...

I wonder if they have other changes in store? :(

Alright, I checked a bottle we had and it says it's bottled by CITGO, so I suppose that's okay. Then I looked at the back of one of an Advance Auto Parts bottle to see who made that and it says "This product is not bottled by Ashland Corp, owner of the registered trademark Valvoline ®."

Seems like citgo makes a lot of people's oil..

As does Mobil.

I think someone should make a list....

Daves, one of the reasons I left AutoZone is because of hiring practices. All the people that came online in my last couple of months were just warm bodies. They knew nothing, nor did they give a crap, about cars or trucks or anything, so when someone needed advice, they had to come to me. I got sick of being the only "parts guy" in a parts store, so I left. I'm not sure if Wal Mart is going to make things worse or not, but since I'm no longer there, I don't really give a flying rats ass.

Somehow that does not suprise me... they have cheap prices but

at the same time certain stores are run by morons who will spend

45 min. trying to order you a water pump for a 1972 Porsche 911.

Judging by that-it sounds like they are going to be a lot like Wal-Mart.

I'm glad you left. :)

Sounds like they will be more "show" than "go"

Still see a lot of that, 68.

Or those who try to force sell you something...

My first job as the lead parts guy at AutoZone was to test what people knew. Namely water pump for a '69 Beetle normally showed me if they actually knew something or not. Nine times out of ten, they'd start looking stuff up, and I'd have to tell them to just stop, turn around, walk away from the parts counter, and go watch some more "training" videos in the back.

Hell, I'd just tell them to keep looking. ^_^ That's like one of those things you do to the new 'green' guys, like telling a new jobsite appretice that you need a widget-puller and to go and find it.

Or telling someone younger to go look for 500 yards of flight line when you're out on a flight line marshalling aircraft.

166132[/snapback]

I loved that one. Or you could send someone for...

a bucket of propwash

K9P solvent

the keys to the airplane's ignition (I love doing that to new pilots)

a left hand spanner wrench

a tach generator sling (the tach generator is about the size of your fist)

Or you can have someone...

listen at the back of an engine when you yell in front of it for an echo check

run back and forth in front of the plane with foil doing a radar check

Really, you'd never believe what you can people to do around airplanes, or what they will believe.

Oh I know. I was being a smart ass one day at Warner-Robbins when the B-1s were getting ready to head outbound. We were marshalling them (one of our "expeditions" with my ROTC unit while I was in college), and I told someone to stand behind one of 'em......Gee, lets think about this, a B-1B Lancer bomber, four afterburning General Electric engines, each producing about 35,000-lbs of thrust a piece, and I tell you to go and stand behind one.....brain damaged child....

"Oh shoot, I forgot my hammer. Can you go get it? It's on top of the tool case."

"Here ya go."

"What is this? No, no, no, I need a left-handed hammer."

"Oh...sorry, where is it again?"

"... Never mind. Go wait in the truck until quitting time."
