July 25, 200619 yr What famous race car had a engine who's supercharger was driven directly off the crank? One quick hint: It's displacement was such that each cylinder was more than a liter in size. Oh, and a famous celebrity now owns this car.
July 26, 200619 yr Author Nope... but closer still, in some ways. I have a photo of this car wearing green paint but it's now black and I saw it in person a few months ago. It was much more impressive in person.
July 26, 200619 yr Well, per the clue, a 6-cylinder would be at least 6 liters (365 CI) and an 8 would be at least 8 liters (488 CI). I believe the Duesy SC 8 was a 'mere' 420 CI. It's bretheren Cord & Auburn didn't have any SC motors as big, I am fairly certain. Hmmmm...
July 26, 200619 yr Author Yes indeed Balthazar... 6 and 8 cylinder motors would be HUGE in accordance with this formula.... not that I'm saying weather it's a 3-banger or a V16.
July 26, 200619 yr Author HINT: It's not an Inline six, not a flat four & not a V8. You -----> Me ------>
July 27, 200619 yr Author C'mon people... at least take a few guesses. This might help: The Blower ________ first appeared at the Essex six hour race at Brooklands on 29 June ____. However the car proved to be very unreliable. ______ himself had never accepted the Blower ______. He said that "there was no substitution for cubic inches" and that supercharging a ______ was "to pervert the design and corrupt the performance". However Birkin somehow managed to persuade ______to produce the 50 supercharged cars necessary for the model to be accepted for the ____ Le Mans 24 h race. At the end a total of 54 Blower _______ were built. I think the car that is now black was green back in the day but I may be wrong on that perticular detail. Either way this should make it really easy for those of you who know your racing history very well.
July 27, 200619 yr I would guess the bentley blower and I guess that Bentley currently owns it. Edited July 27, 200619 yr by lakefire
July 28, 200619 yr Author Yes that's the one. My confusion lies in who owns which car. They made 54 or so of them but in any case Ralph Lauren owns a black one, I thought it might be the one that raced/won Lemans but perhaps not. In any case it's an inline 4 cylinder 4.5litre motor and the roots-type blower is driven directly off the crank.
