In 2005, Toyota recalled 775,000 Tundra and Tacoma pickups, and the Sequoia and 4Runner SUVs because of ball joint problems that could lead to suspension failure. The current investigation is taking a new look at continued complaints of suspension problems with 2003 and 2004 Tundras.

The NHTSA has 142 incidents of ball joint failure on file, with two-thirds of the failures occuring on four-wheel drive models.

what's up with ball joints dying? Dodge has that prob too per another thread...odd...do any GM models have issues with ball joint failure?

nah, GM has never had a problem with crappy ball joints, however they have torn up many an idler arm and pitman arm on the older trucks. Being a parts guy I get to hear all sorts of things about suspension and steering components and I haven't once heard a peep about an abnormal amount of GM trucks coming in with catastrophic ball joint failure.

My buddys 1996 Tacoma had bad ball joints and tie rod ends at less than 50k which practically made the truck undriveable and very quickly wore the inner part of his tires out! We had to make a 12 hour drive to North Carolina to pick him up because of it. He has never bought a Toyota product since.

I've found that almost every truck, especially four-wheel-drive models all have suspension problems of some form. With everyone else, its ball joints, with GM is Pitman arms and Idler arms.
