Front Wheel Drive

There is a theory that with modern engineering and equal-length half-shafts that 300hp is the maximum that can be streetable. Cars like the top of the line Cadillac front-drivers (DeVille/DTS, Seville, Eldorado) have 300/305hp ratings.

The Deville/DTS, Seville/STS and Eldorado/ETC are 2nd in line with 300 rated hp. What`s number 1?

Probably the '66 Toronado..but that would be in gross hp, not net..

I'm not sure about current FWD models..

I have no idea... before sometime in the early '70s, cars used gross hp ratings. Today, net, I think.

Yep, they use net now.

 • Author

are you then implying that the car is post 1976?

186329

Nope, it`s being built right now.

Since it's FWD only, that eliminates Audi's high powered AWD models. All the Japanese FWDers are under 300, I'm pretty sure. I can't think of anything recent that's domestic with over 300hp and FWD.

post 1976 means.... after 1976.... which is where we are now..  :AH-HA_wink:

You`re right :duh::)

Lets list the current high powered front drivers:

Caliber SRT-4 = 300

what'd I miss?

186338

You`re missing one. It`s actually 2 cars that share the same platform.

Monte Carlo SS = 303

That's because the 300C & Charger are wiping the floor

with them. nOtice the only significant differences... Their

motor is not transversely mounted & it happens to send

power to the rear wheels unlike the now-lame W-body.

Owning a 1997 STS for a few years has taught me a few

things, one of them being that a 300 horsepower FWD car

is useless like Sparrow with a broken wing.

Um...the only difference the average consiumer notices between an Impala/GP and a 300/Charger is the fact that the W body cars are bland and unoriginal in their styling while the LX cars are rather brash in their styling.

the shark picks up the scent.....

What is wrong with the orientation of the engine? while I doubt there are any rear drivers out there that are transversely mounted.... there are front drivers out there that are longitudinatlly mounted.

The 300c's predecessor the 300m was longitudinally mounted FWD.

Others include:

Any GM full size front drivers prior to 1985.

VW Passat of the 2001 generation <don't know about the others>

All of the Chrysler LH cars.

But really 68.... we all know... we all, painfully, know your opinion on FWD cars, hard tops, transversly mounted engines, and Toyota. Must you make a rant in EVERY thread that happens to mention one of those subjects?

VW Passat of the 2001 generation <don't know about the others>

Yes...any Aud-based Volkswagens (first and fourth generation Passats), Volkswagen Polo (US market Fox)

Audi (except Volkswagen-based models)

Honda Legend (second and third generation)

Honda Vigor (first generation)

Renault, Lancia, Alfa Romeo (many older models)

Toyota Tercel (first generation)

Datsun F10/Cherry

Saab (prior to the 9000)

Subaru (four- and six-cylinder models)
