October 6, 200619 yr Military Wants a More Conservative Hummer ...in the fuel economy sense, that is. The Defense Department wants a new Humvee. One of its complaints: The Humvee eats too much fuel. The vehicle, an icon of the military for about two decades since it replaced the World War II-era Jeep, gets as few as 4 miles per gallon in city driving and 8 miles per gallon on the highway. The Pentagon wants a Humvee replacement that weighs 30 percent to 40 percent less and uses proportionately less fuel. Read "Miltary wants refined Humvee" @ The Detroit News
October 6, 200619 yr Maybe they should give funding to GM to do it, then. I don't see why GM would develop a lightweight Humvee, making it very expensive because it would still need to be really strong, just because that's what the Military wants. Also, why are they complaining about fuel economy? First, they can afford it, and second, nothing in the military gets good MPG, so why are they so concerned about the Humvee improving?

October 7, 200619 yr Just goes to show how strapped for cash the military is these days. But I doubt the M1-A1 gets better mileage...
