For 2008, the Cobalt SS will be turbocharged. For 2009, the 2.2 will be the LAP instead of the L61.

There is also a possibility of a six-speed manual transmission.

Designed for a torque rate of up to 400 Nm, the new six-speed manual transmission by Fiat-GM-Powertrain, internally named F40 transmission, is a new torque transmission benchmark for FWD cars with transverse engine and transmission installation. Development of the new transmission was led by Opel Powertrain GmbH in Rüsselsheim, Germany. It was first used in the Opel Signum and Vectra in combination with the 2.0 Turbo Ecotec, the 1.9 CDTI, and 3.0 V6 CDTI Ecotec engines. During the development phase of the compact, low mass manual transmission, simple matching provisions for Saab, Pontiac, Fiat, Lancia, and Alfa Romeo models were also included.

F40 is the same 6-speed manual as the G6 and the Saab 9-3.

I'm willing to guess the LAP is the 2.2L Hybrid, given that the RPO code for the 2.4 Hybrid is LAT.

Making wider availability of the 2.4-liter I-4 would be a very wise move-how much power is this turbocharged version and will this make an appearance on the Astra Red Line or a G5 GXP?

Look at the codes closer, LAP is 2009 and appears to replace the base L61,

LNF is the 2.0 which is the DI turbo.

Good point. The car I owned that I had the most fun in was my '87 Integra with the rousing 113 hp. I wish there was a little bit more emphasis on high fuel economy than over-the-top performance these days.

I like the Cobalt, but I couldn't get too excited over the SS I drove because I don't care for the feel and sound of supercharged cars. I'm not sure I care for turbocharging any more than supercharging, but choices are always good.

yeah, but that's why it's nice to live in a "ruralish" area. not nearly as much rush hour traffic...

i all comes back to cars are made to be driven philosophy.

Old news as I posted the other day that some of the staff is already being trained to dyno test these at Lordstown.

He said times for 0-60 would be in the mid to upper 5 sec range.

As for HP I expect power to level off soon but with the reach for better MPG I expect to see less weight in cars. Add that lower weight to the present power we have the best of both worlds. Also with less weight it would improve braking and handling

Go test a Monte Carlo SS, Impala SS, Grand Prix GXP, or Cobalt SS/SC and tell me how much torque steer you feel.

You're not alone. Plenty of people don't like manual shift. We only succumb to the Madison Avenue paradise of driving with wind in our hair, enjoying the mountain twisties with a babe at our sides...the reality of stop and go traffic with a manual shift is a different experience that Madison Avenue doesn't want to show on their commercials.!

yes the HHR-SS was announced weeks ago w/ an auto trans option. It could easily go into the Cobalt. But will they do it?

I really think so---maybe only the 4 door--I can't see GM certifying this engine/trans combo for just one model.
