November 1, 200619 yr How can the SC sell so well (for it's segment) when there are countless other vehicles for a similar price that are so much better? Why anyone would buy one over it's competitors is beyond me... Toyota was up 12.2%, but if I read this correctly then there total sales were only up 16k units. Not that impressive, IMO, especially considering 11k of those sales were because the Yaris and FJ weren't on sale last year.
November 1, 200619 yr Here is a comparo. 2005 2006 % Toyota 173,085 189,011 13.6 GM 257,622 301,317 21.6 Which means GM actually outperformed Toyota with respect to growth during October? And may be GM's market share may have grown up this month?
November 2, 200619 yr "What a difference a year makes," said Jim Lentz, TMS executive vice president. "Last October the industry plunged to a seven-year low, weaning itself from an incentive binge. Today the industry is seeing modest gains on the strength of fresh products." aint that the truth...

November 2, 200619 yr Because GM has more brands than toyota? 211645 not really... but GM if GM is really on a rebound it will always outperfom the market... but toyota really isnt up... look at most of the sales... they are almost all down compared with last year... only differences are a few new products and they are still using 0% on 06 models unlike GM...

When your baseline is small, dramatic % improvement will appear much larger.... Also, bear in mind that these sales were achieved with 0%/72mo. financing deals that cost GM in the long run.

November 15, 200619 yr GM was not offering any 0% durring october... except for the 06 tahoe suburban and avalanch... which have all been sold out for a year 215791 My bad...they just averaged $3,000 rebates on top of the new 'value pricing'...much better. Check the monthly retail reports to see the disaster yourself. A big chunk of the sales 'increase' came as a result of fleets. Sales in my area were about 80% of targeted numbers for Chevy. Anyone claiming that Toyota's numbers are an indicator of weakness isn't dealing with reality. Again, the numbers last year were so bad for the big 2 that they mean squat.
November 15, 200619 yr Where can we find retail sale numbers? 216124 Oh, and there were a number of 06's with 0% in October, I just grabbed a copy of Automotive News for Oct.31st....Fleet sales are still around 20%, IIRC. It is my understanding from our Toyota store that sales are currently supply constrained...meaning they literally can't get 'em fast enough for many models...The Chevy store I have an office in currently is #1 in our region. There are a number of stores that are going under or being sold in the region. Only Ford's plight makes GM look better right now. Of all of the nameplates GM sells, only Saturn is up for the year. All others are off between 10-20%. How can that be defined as successful?
November 15, 200619 yr Dealer problems are no surprise - hello! We have over 40 GM stores in the Greater Toronto Area and there is 22 Toyota stores - yet we sell the same volume! Although GM's products are better than they've ever been, falling market share in the presence of increased competition (let's face it: a '88 Camry was no serious threat, but a 2006 is) was inevitable. Unless GM can reverse its market share fall (impossible, IMO), dealers will have to be jetisoned enmasse and probably even brands, too. None of this is pleasant, but I believe it will be necessary. I believe there is no shame in settling at 20% market share in North AMerica. Any car company in the rest of the world would kill for that kind of share over there! Holding onto 35%+ market share was unreasonable, given the strengths of some of the car companies out there.
November 19, 200619 yr Surprising the Camry is not selling any better with an all-new model that has much improved styling. I had read when the Camry came out they were speculating sales of almost half a million and needed the Subaru plant for the added volume. I guess the myth styling is low on the list for those that buy Camrys is true. Also surprising the 4 Runner has not been affected by the bottom falling out of the mid-size SUV mkt like at GM, Ford & Chrysler. I always thought the 4 Runner was one of the most bland mid-size SUV's out there.
