Chevy’s 650-hp Corvette SS caught heading in for EPA testing

Not even a month has passed since we first reported on Chevrolet’s plans for a super Corvette, a halo model well in excess of the already superb Z06. Judging by these spy shots, it appears assurances we were given earlier this year that the car was on the development fast track (“To Hell and Back,” May 8) were right on target.

These photos were taken by George Kachadoorian just outside of Ann Arbor last week. He suspects the car was headed in for EPA testing.

While the hood scoop indicates this is something other than an ordinary Z06, the real prize is under the hood where our spies previously heard the whine of what is most likely a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 pushing as much as 650 hp. The engine, which will be hand-built at a rate of 1500-2000 per year at the General Motors Performance Center outside Detroit, features an integrated intake manifold intercooler similar to the one GM developed for the Cadillac STS V-Series.

So far, names for the production supercharged Corvette include everything from Z07 to Blue Devil to Corvette SS to Sting Ray. No matter what they call it, look for production of the 2009 model to start in early 2008. And set aside at least $100,000 if you want to one in your driveway.

I hope they leave the hood just like that </sarcasm>

Can't wait to read the reviews.

Nice!

And I hope it's called SS.

If they make the Z07 different than the current model.......start by shrinking the ass end of this car.....PLEASE!!!!!!!!

The C6 Corvette has been an awesome generation thus far, now the super vette shall only make things even better :D

Corvette and hood scoop?  No thanks.

Seriously though...if they made it like that, it would be sick.

yeah the stingray style hood scoop would be kick ass

I agree, that would totally kick ass. And actually, that looks like it would be a possible direction. I just hope they don't also have the Z06's scoop on there as well, but I'm sure they won't.

Like that, 'maybe', with the rest of the styling to have a cohesive nature, but a pizza box on a nice hood does not make for an attractive Corvette.

The top ones look evil...I can't wait to see this thing!

The above picture is a hoax by Winding Road Magazine, they display all how they did it in their current issue. It is a free internet magazine ran by David E. Davis (of Car and Driver and Automobile Magazine fame) its pretty good and its issues can be downloaded for free.

Uh well that was an interesting way to waste $400. Doesn't exactly help the credibility of people like Brenda and I either. People will start thinking we do that kind of thing.

"The Game: To obtain the first spy shot of the Corvette "Blue Devil."

Unfortunately they lost that game before it began. I shot the powertrain mule on 10/3/06.

That's pretty funny! At least it explains why a prototype would have a vanity passenger plate instead of a manufacturer's plate like the ones in CD/BP's shots.
