If Datsun 510 were such junk why did they kick BMWs butt

in racing and become cult classics. Yes, I agree that

compared to a 1968 GTO the Datsun 510 is almost worthless

but then again I'd crush and melt down every Japanese car

made in the past two decades to save just ONE 1970 Nissan

Japanese cars peeked in the late '70s in terms of fun factor,

value, variety, originality & coolness. Late 1970s Japanese

cars were true to their promisse, cheap econoboxes that

afforded average quality, good MPG & decent bang for the

buck while still offering a few cool styling elements, even if

they were all ripped off late 60s American cars. I have a

soft spot for many of those cheap-steel death traps, esp.

the hardtop ones. True affordable RWD in a cute package.

No not really, every once in awhile under Lancia. Most brands have to many pages of junk now compared to 5 years ago. Takes forever to load and longer to go through. Why ? Whats up ?

I dont know much about the 510, but the Datsun L series SOHC engines and drivetrain was excellent compared to anything else around. They were meeting emissions without cat. converter, producing ? -60-75% of the HP comming from a Domestic V8 @ 25+ mpg.

75 Datsun L20B 2000cc had 110hp @ 25+mpg

75 Oldsmobile 350 ?5300cc? had 180hp @ 12-15 maybe 17 mpg.

Great brakes, great handling. Rust was bad, the Japs were the first to use the lighter sheet that everyone uses today, only back then there was no galvanization yet. Everything rusted bad, the domestic's just still had heavier gauge sheet. I remember an early boattail Riv that I could have bought in 76 that was some kind of rust bucket. Stlying.........eh......they had their points but yes everybody knows early Japanese cars were monkey see monkey do. Borrow this and that and add a weird twist. What the Japanese really did was look at what the Italians were doing with power plants and refine it and make them reliable. Also the 510's probably more closely resembled early Fiats. While the fastback cars like the 710 and Celica GT stole from American styling, like the Mustang. Z car styling was a combo of various Ferraris, like a 275 GTB meets a 365GTB Daytona.

Anyone can think what they want but those early Datsuns with the L series engines were the beginning of the scenerio of what has come to be today. They were also the end for Brit and Italian cars in the US market.
