BMW 1-Series U.S.-Bound (Eventually)

BMW 1-Series U.S.-Bound (Eventually)

Posted Image

Way back in January of this year, BMW's CEO, Tom Purves, was quoted by Automotive News as saying that the 1-series, "is absolutely coming" and up until now, that's the last we've heard.

Now, in another interview with AutoNews, Norbert Reithofer, BMW's newest CEO, says, "We will definitely bring the 1-series to the United States, but it will not be a hatchback." Instead, we should expect a coupe, sedan and station wagon (although we're not quite sure how that's different from the image above) in the future.

This makes sense; the 1series has absolutely no trunk space or rear legroom.

The coupe should be really spacious. More low-brow Bimmers for high school chicks.

Yay. Say what you will, but I'd love to have a BMW 1-series... hatchback or otherwise.

The coupe sounds intriguing for my needs. Small, relatively affordable, 4 cylinder, RWD 4 seater. It's what Pontiac should have at the entry level.

I was so excited about the prospect of a $18,000 BMW sedan

when this idea surfaced like 8 damn years ago... but Bangle

doesn not do small cars well and I'm afraid these cars will end

up overpriced and lame. BMW has started to loose my favor

since I went on my ANTI-timing-belt crusaide. Who the f@#k

has a rubber band do the job a metal chain should be? That's

just lame and if I make fun of Honda & Toyota for it then I'm

going to stick to my guns about it even with BMW.

I hope a RWD compact sedan/coupe/wagon along the lines of

the 1968-72 Datsun/Nissan Bluebird/510 will be a reality soon!

Just a spartan, scion-level (in terms of $) back to the basics

lineup of cars available wiht 5/6 speed manual transmissions

and peppy 4-bangers. (Ecotec)

BMWs use timing chains.

bmw has priced the 3 series out of the market so now they need to bring in something else to start at that 30-35k price point.

and sell to high school chicks.

Depending on what it LOOKS like, I may be interested. I am just not a fan of BMWs in general. They don't (and never did to me) look that good especially in comparison with most Audis. The idea of a compact, rear-drive four cylinder car is almost a revelation in this day and age, and truly great if brought to practical result. I agree that Pontiac should definitely be on this playing field. If it looks anything like the G6 or GTO even, I would definitely go for it.
