Why is Chrysler giving overtime when overstocked?

Workers expect longer-than-usual winter shutdowns at Chrysler Group plants that make such oversupplied vehicles as the Dodge Ram pickup and Jeep Commander SUV, following several weeks of overtime.

By the end of this week, hourly workers who build the Commander and Jeep Grand Cherokee at Jefferson North in Detroit will have worked the equivalent of an extra week and a half -- at overtime pay rates -- since their last shutdown this fall, according to company production schedules.

And workers at St. Louis North, who build the Dodge Ram, will have worked almost two weeks' worth of overtime in the 10 weeks since their last shutdown.

Supplies of each of those models are already at levels that many experts see as ample. Large supplies have been blamed for the automaker's $1.5-billion third-quarter loss, begging the question: Why the overtime?

my buddy, a maintenance/production engineer at the Brampton plant has been alternating being off cause the plant is blacked out and working ridiculous amounts of OT.
