Camaro convertible will debut in Detroit

DETROIT -- General Motors will introduce the Camaro convertible concept on the eve of the Detroit auto show at the GM Style event. GM says it will begin selling the convertible in late 2009.

The car will debut Saturday, Jan. 6, amid a fashion-type show combining celebrities, couture and cars. The show opens to the media Sunday, Jan. 7.

The Camaro convertible will be in Hugger Orange pearl tri-coat paint with twin gunmetal gray sport stripes. The color is an update of one offered in 1969. The convertible is based on the original Camaro concept revealed at last year's Detroit show, with some minor body changes to accommodate ragtop styling.

The hardtop Camaro will go on sale in 2009.

"The best follow-up to last year's award-winning Camaro concept is a Camaro convertible," said Ed Welburn, GM vice president of global design, in press release.

The convertible will have a V-8 engine. It will be rear-wheel drive with a manual transmission and a four-wheel independent suspension system with four-wheel disc brakes.

Welburn said: "It's a car that begs to be driven."

Here's yet another pic of the Camaro Concept. Can't really speak to the validity of this pic compared to others, but at least it's an official press release. :AH-HA_wink:

I can. It's real.

Fantastic! Thanks for the affirmation!

Nice! I would like to see one in normal Hugger Orange and white stripes, but this is cool too.

It looks very real and very good. It would be nice if GM released this at the same time as the coupe or at least a few months after it comes to market.

The interior is much closer to production than the coupe and looks wonderful. Keep in mind things the like the door panels are said to be much like what we see. The 4 pack on the floor is said to be expected as an option in the production car. Some of it will change but this will give you a good idea what to expect.

Once you see the better set of pictures please note the little details like the red stripe around the wheels. It give a hint of the old red line tires and I hope they retain this feature into production.

Under the hood is still the same LS2 we saw in the first car so no hints there of the future yet.

I usally like the coupe much better than the convetible but in this case they have done it justice. and I am sure with the roof up it will look good too as GM has had some of the best soft top designes around. Most are clean and blend well with the car.
