January 16, 200719 yr Cuba = Las Vegas II Could be,Fly. Cuba will change, the question is how and how fast.
January 16, 200719 yr The worst part about the death or overthrow of a dictator is the upheaval and unrest that follows the political vacuum. It is unfortunate and nearly inevitable. All of South America, Central America and most of the islands have had this same horrible history. Good riddance to Castro, but fasten your seatbelts, girls and boys - we're in for a bumpy ride.
January 16, 200719 yr Have you read about the "denial" aspect of the whole thing. Some newspapers or news services report one thing and the Cuban government or his relatives say he is on the mend. Absurd. I'm hoping Cuba will be a democracy or some facsimile thereof within the next 5 to 20 years. I grew up in a predominately white neighborhood but the Hispanic faction that was there was largely Cuban as opposed to Mexican (and this is in LA, so that's kind of weird). So, I went to a Catholic school that had a lot of Cuban kids and a lot of my friends were Cuban. I would have to say my best childhood friend was Cuban. I would love to someday go over there and walk through the streets their parents walked, savoring the sights, sounds and smells. Cuban people are wonderfully theatrical and mercurial and I find them similar to Italians in this regard. They've also great a great spirit. Many had to flee Cuba in a hurry, leaving behind their properties and wealth, only to prosper again in the U.S. (I would venture to say Cubans have the highest educational attainment of the Hispanic peoples and are more apt to vote Republican). At any rate, the vacuum part Carbiz speaks of is tough. Being that it is essentially in the Americas and predominately Christian, I doubt that the upheval will look anything like we see in the Middle East. In the end, it will be a better place and, who knows, we might be able to vacation there someday.
January 17, 200719 yr If/When Cuba opens up to the world, there will be a treasure trove of classic American cars on the market! :AH-HA_wink:
January 17, 200719 yr If/When Cuba opens up to the world, there will be a treasure trove of classic American cars on the market! :AH-HA_wink:I knew SOMEONE would bring that up...you beat Balthy to it !
January 17, 200719 yr he should of been dead a long time ago just that Cuba's security is alot stronger than you think.
January 17, 200719 yr All I can say is that "it's about time". I mean, it seems for someone like me that he has been around forever.
January 17, 200719 yr If/When Cuba opens up to the world, there will be a treasure trove of classic American cars on the market! :AH-HA_wink: yeh but will any of them have less than 500K miles on them? I've never been to Cuba but when I do see some pics of it on tv I always see 1950's Chevy's driving around. What are the most popular cars there?
January 17, 200719 yr If/When Cuba opens up to the world, there will be a treasure trove of classic American cars on the market! :AH-HA_wink: My thoughts exactly!
January 17, 200719 yr Castro's death will be the death of an icon... But Communism will be there to stay, perhaps with a more brutal edge once someone else new gets their hands on the wheel.
January 17, 200719 yr I think if he dies that nothing will change for Cuba just a new leader. the peasants are by force "pleased" and they wont overthrow the gov. well back in 1997 we were no longer keeping a close eye on Cuba. So the US wont care what happens because Cuba has no more red scare factor going on. However we still watch Russia with a fine tooth comb. We still have fingers on the Launch button its still hard to believe after its been 16 years, since Nov. 9th 1989 when the wall fell. Don't let me open my vault of knowledge on the U.S. Government and its polices. Working for them for around 15 years teaches you a lot. Its even as far as believing the moon landing never happened. The reason just to scare the World in to thinking we are the best and Soviets are the worst. Like the USS 593. It was designed to be the worlds greatest quieter faster powerful just to scare the Reds. But because of simple things and lack of inspection the crew died because it couldn't resurface. because the emergency air ballast to quickly resurface in emergency's had this filter thing and the air rushing through them cause it to freeze up and not allow the water ballast to empty. Also welds broke cause water to come in with a enough force shear a arm off. sorry to ramble on just don't get me started. please...
