January 16, 200719 yr According to my estimates, in order for me to travel the 3200 miles from my house in Massachusetts to Tulsa, Oklahoma & back in my Super-88, taking into account premium fuel, lead substitute, tolls/food etc. I'll need just about $800. If I can split the gas bill with a friend... (XP715 you reading this?) then my cost drops down to about $450. Now why the hell, you ask would make my one vacation of the summer a roadtrip to a not-so exciting town in Oklahoma, 1598 miles away? First, I've been saying for a long time now that I want to meet up with my buddy Duffy at some halfway point in the USA this year. He lives in Phoenix AZ and just sold his steel-roof 1991 Pontiac GTA (350TPi) and bought a >MINT< 1961 Rambler American with 18K miles. It's got a inline-six flathead and three speed auto. Pretty much as spartan a car as you could buy in 1961 while still buying American made. So one fantastic vacation would be to have our two classics from the 1960s meet up at some half way point i the great U.S. of A. But why the hell Tulsa, Oklahoma? & why on June 15th of this year you ask? THIS IS WHY!!! http://www.topgear.com/content/features/st...ories/22/1.html Now my question to you guys is how many other C&G members can meet up with me/us to see this Fifty-7-Belvedere get dug up after a 50 year nap under the Tulsa sidewalk in front of the courthouse? C'mon.... Knightfan? Anyone? ~~~~~~~~~~~ On June 15th, 2007 T!GHT WH1P$ will be witnessing the ultimate epoch of 1950s Mopar originality! http://www.cheersandgears.com/forums/index...showtopic=14872 “Both optimists and pessimists contribute to our society. January 17, 200719 yr That's awesome, and so are any sort of car related road trips. Not too expensive, fun, and you get to do a lot of driving. I am jealous. Edited January 17, 200719 yr by REDO1GPGT
January 17, 200719 yr That is amazing! First time I've ever heard of a car being buried in a time capsule. If you really want to go on an adventure and meet your friend halfway this looks like a good reason to do it. Wonder what kind of shape the car will in and what kind of plastic they wrapped it in to preserve it. Hope they have a new battery and gas on hand to start it up.
January 17, 200719 yr Sixty-8, I've seen Christine. Read the book even. I'm not totally sure, but I think I had a nasty nightmare about it once. You want to put me through that trauma again? I might have a car (I want to be seen in) by June. Maybe. Just maybe. :thisforumisuselesswithouthissmiley: Damn. Nothing.

C'mon.... Knightfan? *chuckles* Irony rocks, they say . I was, actually, just thinking about you the other evening about this. Some of my friends from ChevyTalk (one from Oklahoma City ... the one who was taught by my grandfather in Ames OK many years ago ... and one from Dallas TX), as well as a few others, are planning a gathering at this very event. I wondered if you had heard about it and, if you had, if you were going to attend. Myself ... you know already that I would LOVE to. But, well, we'll see. I have a couple trips in mind (up to MN, down to FL) ... and not much vacation to work with. So, we'll see. If you do go, you know you are more than welcome to stop by here ... either going or coming ... if I'm not able to attend. January 17, 200719 yr Author I'll take you up on that... and I expect at least a short ride in your 1972 Monte Carlo... Just drive me down to the local Wendy's so we can have some lunch & back, but all four windows MUST BE ROLLED DOWN. That is the rule of Hardtop ownership here at TIGHT WHIPS car club! The temprature has to drop past 32* (0* celsius) in orer for the windows to be rolled UP.

This is the kind of condition most people are hoping the Tulsa car is in to this day. We shall see soon enough. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

C'mon.... Knightfan? Anyone? Hmm... It's too early to tell. I'd love to do something like this, though it all depends on my automotive and financial situation when this time rolls around. However, I will say, since you'd have to go though PA in one way or another, you could just pick me up and take me with you if things don't work out for me.
January 18, 200719 yr If the funds are available, and the family is in good health, we might come out. Tulsa sounds like a good roadtrip.
January 18, 200719 yr Author Hmmm.... pick up B.V. in Penn and then drop him off on way back up...? That's assuming we first recognize your Millenia as an official member of T1GH+ WH!P$... Rusty Jones has the final say on that matter.
January 18, 200719 yr That's assuming I still have it. And there's always my Grand Am, it's a member, in all its non-running glory.
January 18, 200719 yr There's a rukle about riding in each other's cars? So Sixty8, can you stand a ride in a FWD Intrepid? NO way the Cuda's are coming out, all though if you ever came by and visited you could see them, and that really old car from the 10's-20's at the used car dealer by my house.
January 18, 200719 yr That is a good idea of meeting. I am not sure of June, but if I do not have too much of work count me in. That story is awesome. Time Capsule, HA!
January 19, 200719 yr Hmm...seeing a tailfin era car exhumed sounds cool. No means to get there, though, unless Sixty8 feels like swinging by Laurel after he's done in Brookville...the Sonoma's still approved by Rusty Jones, right?
January 19, 200719 yr Sounds like a great excuse for a road trip. I expect lots of photos of the odyssey.
January 19, 200719 yr Author Sounds like a great excuse for a road trip. I expect lots of photos of the odyssey. Speaking of which... remember when I visited you in 2005 and we hung out at the Barnes & Noble there was a place close by... (roofing company?) that had 3 if not 4 (1980s) ElCaminos for company vehicles. Their Business name was on the door and everything. I took a photo with my throwaway camera since by that point both of my digital camera's batterys were exhausted. The picture never came out and I always wanted to ask you if you know where it is maybe you could snap a pic. for me?
January 19, 200719 yr Too bad it's on June 15th - I still have work until the 19th (assuming we have no snow days to make-up at the end of the year). Otherwise I would have suggested Sixty8 that you try to fill up your car with as many people as comfortable and that could financially afford to help with the costs and drive them all to the event.

January 19, 200719 yr Author Middle-Class-Mopoar-Fan: The next official TIGHT WHIPS event coming up is the 1st Annual Winter Scavenger Hunt, but before that can happen the trivia contest conclusion has to be posted. Used to be all official T.W. meetings were in my barn on Tue. or Wed. nights, but as of late everyone's schedules have been all over the F%#&@ng place and coordinating a meeting has been painful. If we set up a T.W. meeting for next tue. night at 8:00 - 10:30pm what are the chances you can make it?

If not I can try to make it anyway, you'll just have to give me directions.
January 20, 200719 yr Sixty4, I will certainly do that for you. I just have to remember to take my camera with me.
January 20, 200719 yr Silvester Next tuesday I'm not working so you can count me in for the TWCC meeting Oh, and ya see? I did check out C&G like you told me to, LOL :-D
January 21, 200719 yr Author You need to get a signature with all three of your cars... You've got a pretty cool fleet: TPi350 powered 3rd gen. January 21, 200719 yr Author Well then you guys will have to stare at a refrigerator white 1959 Buick soon.
January 22, 200719 yr Come'on $h!stick! get with it man! its a MALIBU!!!!!!! HOW COULD YOU!!!!! On that note, heres a little colage (is that how its spelled?) of pretty much every car I've owned and driven (I say "And driven" cause technically I've owned an 89 Camaro with a 400sbc / TH350 as well but it was in pieces in my driveway several hours after signing the bill of sale)
January 22, 200719 yr Author I must still have that '77 Nova 3-on-the-tree on the brain.... WTF was I thinking about when I wrote that?
January 23, 200719 yr What do you drive now? 1998 Chevy S-10 LS with a 2.2 four and a 5-speed stick. The wipers are broken, the paint looks like $h!, and the interior smells downright funky.
January 24, 200719 yr Doesn't work. Makes things have a really wierd . . . I guess you could call it an "aftersmell" or "undersmell."
January 24, 200719 yr Do the wipers just not work? You could always grab a motor from the junkyard....the arms too if ya need them.
January 25, 200719 yr As for the title of this thread, it's clearly an imposter. This is Roadtrip Grande Maximus if I've ever seen it. :AH-HA_wink:
January 25, 200719 yr Author G*d damn.... makes the "Power Tour" look like a run to Store 24 for a pack of smokes. That would be something amazing to tell your grandkids about!
January 26, 200719 yr Do the wipers just not work? You could always grab a motor from the junkyard....the arms too if ya need them. Well, yeah, they do work, but barely. Also, the end of the stalk and the wiper speed control dial broke off. In order to use what small amount of worth they have left, you have to get a pair of needle-nose pliars/wire cutters as a subsitute for the dial. Ahh. F it, at least you got hauling capability, a manual trans & RWD. That's just about all that truck has going for it. I looked at an '06 Dakota yesterday. About seven-thousand miles and it was under fifteen grand. It's a base model with a few extras and a six cylinder. Not that shabby on power. The interior . . . well, it had decent materials but the design kept reminding me of a '86 S-10 for some reason. I think I'll take a look at a white Camaro today with an aftermarket hood with functional scoops. I'll also look at a two-door Blazer (hopefully an Xtreme) or Jimmy if I can.
January 26, 200719 yr Author eXtreme Blazers were cool. Little known fact: you could order a 2wd Blazer Extreme with a 5-speed... all the way to te end of production. Too bad they had none of the exotic turbocharged prowess of the GMC Typhoon they resembled.
January 26, 200719 yr eXtreme Blazers were cool. Little known fact: you could order a 2wd Blazer Extreme with a 5-speed... all the way to te end of production. Bet that would be really hard to find locally. But, damn, I'd like to have one. Five-speed and a V6? That's got "fun-to-drive" written all over it. Too bad they had none of the exotic turbocharged prowess of the GMC Typhoon they resembled. If I find a black Xtreme for the right price, you can bet that I will turbocharge it sooner or later. :AH-HA_wink:
January 26, 200719 yr Author Of all the trucks I've owned my 1991 Blazer S10 was my favorite by far! It was a 4.3, 5-speed manual trans. (shift on the floor) manual transfer case and I bought it for $600 with 104,000 miles. I drove that truck for about 18 months, racked up anoter 24,000 miles & did not break down once. I broke off several sets of tow hooks and finally got a pair off a GMC 3500, those never broke! I beat the hell out of that poor little S10, I drove it throught a metal gate once, almost rolled it over off roading on more than one occasion, jumped small hills with it, did burnouts in it, drove through snow banks & hit a few of those orange plastic barrels on the highway when some Peterbilt swerved to avoid them placed hap-hazzardly and I did not see it in time. I towed more than double what the truck was supposed to be capable of & on more than one occasion I towed demolition derby cars w/ it. When I made sharpnell & gear oil soup in my '68 Camaro's pumpkin I walked home and got my Blazer and off home I went to tow it home in my S10. I've got no beef what so ever with the S10 chassis/frame/mechanicals! Tthe only Blazer eXtreme that I saw built as a 5-speed was a 2002 (or 2003) that I found on the dealer locator computer. I think it was out in NY state. Blue w/ gold Z/28 stripes. Edited January 26, 200719 yr by Sixty8panther
January 26, 200719 yr I know what you mean. Many of my relatives own S-10s and Blazers or have in the past. I had an uncle who managed to milk almost 400,000 miles out of a red '86 he had. After the new wore off of it, he would take it to some pretty rough places. The truck never gave up or quit. My dad also had an '88 S-15 (Sierra Classic package) which lasted to about the 288,000 mark. And that truck was rebuilt (meaning that someone totaled it). Seriously, why would someone want to buy a f@#king Tacoma?
January 26, 200719 yr I'm sorry, but my professional opinion of S10/Blazers are that they are POS's. End of story.
January 26, 200719 yr Author Seriously, why would someone want to buy a f@#king Tacoma? I'm not sure myself, has something to do with being either a snob, moron or a deuchebag!
