Upgrade a labtop?

Featured Replies

I could be getting a older Dell Laptop in the next few weeks..for cheap.

Downside is, that it is a celeron(not that big of a deal) 256k of memory, and a 20gb hard drive.

Would it be worth it to upgrade it? And not cost me an arm and a leg?

I plan use it for school-related stuff, so it doesn't have to be powerful....

Upgrading memory and hard drives on Dells is usually a snap. Go to www.crucial.com - they have a memory selector that allows you to specify your system and tell you the max amount of memory that they can put in it. As for the hard drive, it's usually a standard 2.5" notebook drive that's screwed into a Dell-specific caddy. Without knowing the specifics of what you want to upgrade to, I'd say it'll cost about $100-200 total.

Hmmm...

Quite cool.

I'd settle for 512k and a 60-80GB drive...nothing too crazy...unless I get a good deal...

I wonder what would be faster... PC XT with 640K or this? :P

That Celeron will be ass... But then again, with plenty of memory, you should be good.

for 512mb ram and a 60gb hdd i'd be surprised if you had to spend more than $130....

what speed is the celeron?....(wondering if it's a P3 or a P4 derivative)

Try and go for a gig of ram... it'll really open up things and let you run things more smoothly. I find 512mb too little when running win2000 or xp.

I'll have to find that out....

I know it's a few years old...

I know it has XP on it now..I need to find out how much a gig would be...

looking through some ads for about 700 you can get a nice computer with vista Celeron M 100gb and DVD burners and stuff. look around at new before you go with old. but if not go for it use Newegg.com for the upgrades though.

Yeah, I know I could still go new..but I can't by new until late this year...

The Dell is just temp...but I would like to make it a bit faster.
