At first blush, the Bevel looks like a next-generation Cube concept. But Nissan describes the Bevel as a "dynamic, multipurpose vehicle" designed for "male empty-nesters actively engaged in hobbies, recreation, and community service." Talk about your market niche.

If the Rouge is a smaller, RAV4-fighting Murano, the Bevel looks like a smaller, sub-Xterra, albeit more a crossover than hard-core SUV. Nissan North America in La Jolla, California, designed the Bevel with asymmetric styling (coincidentally, like the Japanese-market Cube), high-utility three-zone interior and glass roof-mounted solar panels and drive-by-wire steering, throttle, and brakes. The Bevel is substantially larger than the Cube (which Nissan/Renault chief Carlos Ghosn promised would be built for left-hand-drive markets in its next iteration and is expected to launch in the U.S. for the 2009 model year). The Bevel's engine compartment is designed for a V-6/electric hybrid drivetrain, Nissan says. To sum up, Nissan has an intriguing design for a potential future product.

It's like I don't even have to say anything, it's a punchline all on its' own.

edit: picture didn't work...

Now THAT'S ugly.

"Rouge"

I see this word misspelt often. The Nissan model is called the Rogue. That's the one that's pronounced "rohg", and the meaning that Nissan probably had in mind was "no longer obedient, belonging, or accepted and hence not controllable or answerable; deviating, renegade" (The other definitions aren't so flattering).

Rouge, pronounced "roozh", is "any of various red cosmetics for coloring the cheeks or lips". It's funny that a Motor Trend writer would misspell the name in this manner.

As for the Bevel... Well, if they produced it, it'd make a great billboard car (see also: Scion xB, Mini Cooper, HHR, and New Beetle). And the wheels are cool. I bet that giant back window has the potential to add another digit to a rear-end collision repair bill.

Hah, I gave you guys fair warning:

Nissan Bevel Concept & Nissan Rogue

I decided to put these two together mostly to get the pain over with as quick as possible.

Simply put, the Bevel is a steaming pile of cow dung. Which is good since it has a brownish paint job. What anyone at Nissan was thinking with the Bevel, I have no idea. It appears as if they had 2 extra concept cars sitting around. They cut them both in half, took the front end of one and the back end of the other and glued them together. Then they took a few extra parts from some other old concept cars and glued those on too. The result? Horrible proportions. Horrible design. Horrible car.

The Nissan Rogue is Nissan’s attempt to have their own Hyundai Santa Fe. It’s a conservative little SUV that will fill a spot in the Nissan lineup. Im sure it will sell moderately well but there is nothing special about it at all. A nonevent in my mind.

If I was giving a letter grade for Nissan’s NAIAS showing it would be a D-. The only reason they don’t flunk completely is because they actually debuted something here.
