as far as I know it's never been changed, my 99 monte has 140,000miles on it, would you get it serviced or not?

nothing seems wrong with it other than seldom (a couple times a year) and random not locking of the torque converter, when it shouldn't do that.

I wouldn't rush out and do it right now, its not a Dodge after all, but I would do it sometime in the near future, just for the sake of maintenance.

How bad does the fluid look? Is it burnt? does it feel gritty? Because once you get in the high mileage stage you could do more damage to the trans changing it then just leaving it be.

It can be a risk in higher mileage cars but whatever you do just stay away from the transmission flushes done at oil change shops with that many miles. A pan drop and filter change would be alot safer for the transmission. Its a real risk though that gritty fluid might be the only thing keeping that transmission going. Hope it all goes well..

i'm not going to rush out, but from what i remember checking it 1 or 2 years ago, it was still kinda red

I'd agree with th guys, though you might want to take a good look at it...

I was lucky with the wagon.

It got a late trans change at 70k (by prevs owner)...and it looke pretty bad by 120k...and the shop I went to did a flush even though I said no...

Trans still seems to be doing ok....

Yeah, changing filter and fluid on any vehicle with high miles is iffy simply because you don't know if once you drop the pan and send the fluid there packing, is all the gunk and sludge that was in there going to still be there to hold all those parts together nice and tight. I'd definitely look at the condition. If it isn't gritty feeling, burnt smelling, or pink, I'd change it and risk the thing dropping out on you.
