March 7, 200719 yr I normally figure out my computers problems..but this one has me stumped.. About a week ago-they just stopped working on start up... I bought new speakers (with a sub!) - and hooked them up-nothing- So I tested the old and new speakers on my walkman-they BOTH work. I've gone though everything-Can't figure it out. It might be something simple (or something get deleted) Anybody have any ideas why they don't work at all? Help!

Assuming it's a PC, you could go to the control panel > sounds, speech, and audio devices > sounds and audio devices > hardware (tab), and see if things (speakers, sound card) are listed as installed. You can also try going to the control panel > printers and other hardware > add hardware, go through the promts, and whatever isn't installed should have a question mark in front of it. Hopefully somebody with more computer skills can help you out. The only reason I know this is because I had to reinstall everything (drivers, software etc.) after my hard drive failed.
March 7, 200719 yr Oh yeah... I don't know how to check if a sound card has fried. And, depending on whether it is integrated (part of the motherboard) or stand-alone, it could be a pain-in-the-ass or piece-of-cake respectively.
March 7, 200719 yr if you're in XP check the my computer>properties>device manager to see if it's a driver issue.... if you have a 2 sided 3.5mm jack, you could test it with a multimeter if anything is coming out of it, i'm going with a fried sound"device" ....is it "onboard audio" or an actual sound card? cheap replacements could cost as cheap as ~$20 or so, but if you want a good one for pretty cheap an audigy 2 value (someplaces ~$50) might be want you want.
March 7, 200719 yr I'm not being a smartass, but is the sound (volume) turned up? Good call... the volume could just be muted.
March 7, 200719 yr First, is your new sound system 6-speakers (including the subwoofer)? Does your sound card/motherboard sound have these ports? The green output (which is standard on all PCs) is for the front left/right channels, the black output is for the rear left/right channels and teh orange output is for the center/subwoofer channels. If you don't have them but have teh cords for them than you need a better sound card.

I'm hoping it's not fried, this computer already had a modem issue that had to be replaced.... in the device manager, there should be an "sound, etc devices" catagory,my on board sound is a soundmax chip that is listed under this catagory.... it also has "audio codecs" and such under it as well....i'd have no idea what driver yours would use.
