It is preparing to build about 2.2 million cars and light trucks a year in North America by 2010. But it only has the capacity to produce 1.45 million engines annually, a shortfall of more than 700,000 engines. So it was no secret that Toyota was looking for a site to build a North American engine and transmission plant. Now sources inside and outside the company say Toyota has scrapped that plan in favor of a wave of expansions at one or more of its existing engine plants. Autoweek

March 17, 200719 yr AP Story: Ex Vice-president and ecowarrior Al Gore is praising Toyota Motor Company for it's proposal to add nearly 700,000 zero-emission vehicles to it's fleet of cars sold to the general public. "it's a move that shows the forward thinking that Toyota brings to the table that the U.S. automakers just plain fail to realize. This is exactly why their market share continues to grow leaps and bounds! The Gore family will be adding three of these proposed vehicles to our family fleet as soon as we can." A Toyota spokesperson added to Mr. Gore's comments that Toyota Motor Company is the only automaker in the world that is working at lowering it's carbon footprint, and made the decision to build these non-polluting cars while watching Mr. Gore's Oscar winning movie An Inconvienient Truth while attending a global warming seminar at Mr. Gore's 7,000 square foot mansion, which houses Mr. Gore, Tipper and three cats. No word yet when Toyota, the ultimate car maker in the world, will release the cars. In addition to its value-focused price, the Internal Revenue Service has certified that Camry FootLine buyers will qualify for a tax credit of $1,300. “The Camry FootLine is a great value among the hybrids in the mid-size car segment,” said Toyota General Manager Yamato Hiroshima. “With a starting sticker price over $2,000 less than any mid-sized hybrid sedan and a $1,300 tax credit, it makes true hybrid fuel savings available to more people than ever before.” The Camry Foootline EPA fuel economy rating of 50 mpg in the city and 70 mpg on the highway represents up to a 80 percent improvement in EPA combined fuel economy compared to the non-hybrid Camry(depending on driving conditions). The Camry is assembled at the Toyota Plant in Japan , and Footline hybrid models are beginning to arrive at Toyota retail facilities. The hybrid system in the Camry combines sophisticated controls with a precise electric motor/generator Along with a whole in the floor that the driver and passengers use footpower to assist the electric engine. The system delivers fuel economy gains by providing electric power assist during acceleration, through early fuel cut-off during deceleration with torque smoothing and by shutting the engine off at idle. April 2, 200718 yr Some of that shortfall of engines has already been coming from Japan and according to Toyota they have excess capacity in a new China engine plant and have been shipping some of those 4 cylinder engines to the US Camry plant in Kentucky.
