Canadian Auto Workers at a Chrysler Group plant in Brampton, Ontario, voted Sunday to overwhelmingly accept concessions they rejected just last month. The vote, 1420 to 399, came after a raucous Sunday meeting where union leaders emphasized the cuts were needed to protect jobs and secure work for the plant. Chrysler, a unit of Germany's DaimlerChrysler AG, had told the CAW it would not move forward on a planned $700 million investment in Brampton unless workers accepted the concessions, which include a pay cut of $115 a week and the outsourcing of janitorial jobs. The workers' vote was a "positive step" in bringing the investment to the suburban Toronto plant, Dave Elshoff, a DaimlerChrysler spokesman, said Sunday. "We could not have moved forward without the CAW. This was one of the important steps in the process. We will continue to piece the business case together" regarding the investment, Elshoff said...

...Chrysler is looking into pumping $700 million into the factory to support 2010 and 2011 models and add a fifth vehicle analysts predict could be a production version of the concept Imperial large sedan. That vehicle would be built on the next-generation of the LX platform that underpins the 300C and other models, to be called LY.

Man, $115 seems like a lot a week...how much to workers make on average a week?

Well, I had a GM Oshawa couple pay cash for Z06. Between the two of them, they were making more than $160k a year. They were in their mid-30s, their house was paid for.

You can kind of see why Detroit is in a bit of a panic. They have much older/more senior work force than Toyota does in North America. The labor costs are astronomical. Still, it is going to hurt those workers. We can debate how motivated/lazy or whatever these men/women are, but the fact is that many people can't afford to take a big pay cut. Delphi, anyone?

Thats less than $100/week American, I'm sure they'll be fine making $34.50/hour instead of $37.

Say what you will about the Imperial, but I'm willing to bet it'll be a hit.

Not a lot of people on Cheers & Gears really like the car, but it will help bump the Chrysler brand into the luxury segment, which is something that desperately needs to happen.

I said it was going to go into production. Now there will be an alternative to Lincoln Town Car until Cadillac makes something rear drive and larger. I think the people at Chrysler know that it is polarizing in looks. You know most concepts are usually toned down for production. Personally I am glad to see a car above the 300 anyway. There had something above 300 any way before with Concorde and LHS.

They need to build the Nassau, not the Imperial. The Imp is nothing of the sort, it's a brick on wheels.

Its a risky move on Chrysler's part, yes, but so were the 300/Charger/Magnum.

I think the people at Chrysler know that it is polarizing in looks. You know most concepts are usually toned down for production.

and IIRC, the 300 was pretty polarizong at the beginning but has grown on a lto fo peopel over time

Imperial is about as hideous as a car can get. GOOD LUCK DCX.

No, the current generation Toyota Camry is about as hideous as a car can get.

Even worse is the current generation Mitsubishi lineup.

Probably $50K or less for a car that's looks as expensive as a Rolls but cheaper than a Caddy? Yeah, I'm sure people will buy it.
