Catching ad errors: '75 MC labeled as '76 MC

Featured Replies

Being the "Resident Young Stickler" that I am ... I find it fascinating when I spot ads for cars that advertise for one year of car, but show a completely different year of the same car.

Case in point: 1976 Des Moines Register ad

Check out this, that a friend on the El Camino list posted:

http://www.myelcamino.net/1976.htm

...and scroll down a little bit to the "Clean Sweep" ad.

You see that " '76 Monte Carlo " they have pictured there? Well, I don't think it is; sure looks like a '75. But ... you be the judge and compare....

'75 MC rear (scroll down to bottom):

http://www.chevyasylum.com/mcspotter/1975f.html

'76 MC rear (scroll down to bottom):

http://www.chevyasylum.com/mcspotter/1976f.html

The ad pic shows the MC rear bumper as angling inward (like the '75) instead of a "bulge" at the 2 ends (like the '76).

Sadly, I've seen way too many of these "different year" pictures in ads. Makes you wonder...........

"I saw an old Malibu" ... Doug Stone ... 'I Thought It Was You'

In Camino's thread about his restoration project, GMTruckguy linked to an ad for a red "'77" Monte Carlo... I think that car is a '76. Knightfan, didn't all '77s have a hood ornament? The '76s didn't...

The one that springs to mind for me is an 8-page Dodge 'Scat Pack' as I have for '71, where each page is a performance model ad. Among them is the '71 Challenger T/A... which was not produced for '71 at all. Reportedly the car was airbrushed- it never even existed.

Yeah... this happens all the time.

Dealerships are not exactly known for their attention to detail

when it comesto advertising.

In some respects the dealer can't be blamed. I saw with my own eyes that one model year change on a Chevrolet Corsica was to switch the Chevrolet name from the left to the right of the vehicle on the trunk and to move Corsica LT from the right to the left of the vehicle.

Ahh- I see; dealer ads. Sure- mistakes there all the time. The Scat Pack ad I posted on above was a national print ad from ChryCo.

You are correct, ocnblu. And, actually, of the 2nd generation, the 1977 MC was the only one to have the emblem as a stand-up hood ornament. [believe I used that as one of the trivia questions in a previous MC trivia game ;)]

*pauses to trot back to Camino's thread to check link you mention*

Found it:

From that angle, I can't really tell what year it is. I'd need to see the rear end ... to see the taillights. Yes, no hood ornament is on that car, but the angle is such that you can't see the entire grill ... and I can't tell if an emblem is in the center of the grill or not. If not, then it is a '77 ... but, if the emblem is in the center of the grill, then it may be a '76 ... depending on the taillights.

Course ... on the flipside ... it may be a '76 or a '77 MC ... with a front or rear end from the other year...............

He he

As for the one in the link I posted ... some are saying that it IS a '76 ... but, I'm not convinced. I kinda see what they mean about the taillights ... but that bumper "screams" '75 to me.... Maybe it is a '76 with a '75 bumper. After all ... it does appear to be a DRAWING rendition ;).

Doesnt the '76 have the rectangular headlights while the '75 still has the round ones?

They do it online all the time on the car sites and Ebay.

I laugh when they have an Oldsmobile Eighty Eight pictured and call it:

Delta Royale

Ninety Eight

Ninety Eight Royale

I love when see a picture of a Ninety Eight and they call it:

Eighty Eight

Regency

Delta 88 Regency

The funniest one was the LSS they called Ninety Eight and LSE

now.. there was:

A Ninety Eight

A Eighty Eight

A LSS

A Regency (1997-1998)

They had a Regency one time. It was called

Eighty Eight Regency.. That might be justified.

Indeedy, yes.

'73-'75 = round headlights

'76-'77 = stacked/rectangular headlights

Surprised you aren't trying the trivia this time around, 2005 Equinox ;).:

"I think I've handled more than any man can take" ... Carlos Santana ... 'Why Don't You And I?'

Its also the same year the Caprice got the rectangular headlights. The Impala though didnt get them until the 1977 redesign. Come to think of it the 1976 Malibu also got the regtangular headlights. Dont worry Knightfan, I can usually pinpoint what year an Impala/Caprice or even a Bonneville is just by looking at the subtle things.

Hmmm ... I like ad errors I can actually laugh at. For instance, in a rush, I typed in Vette one day on eBay Motors (I've considered buying an early third-generation model ... hell, they're cheap and my insurance right now only costs around $89 bucks after discounts) and clicked a link that led me to a Vette alright ... a Chevette.

That's the fun of it, isn't it?

BTW ... you, Sixty8 ... and others on here ... should try the trivia:

And YJ ... that is PRICELESS! Was that Chevette in good shape, at least? ;)

I have that brochure somewhere stashed away..that is the ad spread that got me excited about Dodge Challengers when I was a kid in the late '70s..I remember the '71 T/A pic showing a yellow car w/ black top and raindrops on it, IIRC.. the R/T was shown in purple in a 'Vanishing Point' like desert scene..

Well, the paint was a bit faded.
