September 29, 200520 yr Well I guess no one here thought much about Joe Mannix or the customized 67 George Barris Toronado roadster that looked remarkably like a 1970 Toro so I figured what the heck, heres another cool Toronado It answers some of the questions we had on the last topic I posted about this car.
September 29, 200520 yr What Toro is that? I just vaguely remember it. Edited September 29, 200520 yr by HarleyEarl
September 29, 200520 yr Wow razor- where did you find those pics?? And does the Texas plate give you any leads as far as tracking down what may have happened to it?
September 29, 200520 yr Author I knew you would appreaciate this Balthy as per our conversation about this car and its mystery. Id have to say no on hte plate. That must be John Mecom's plate back in the day. Heres the artical and all it offers The new 66 Toronado style was not exactly to John Mecom Jr's liking, so his newly purchased vehicle underwent major cosmetic surgery at Dean Jeffries' shop. A lower front end, longer fenders and a Dodge Charger grille altered the front considerably while the slightly lifted rear-end created the upswept look of a fastback. Both bumpers were removed, and brake and signal lights were replaced with lit Toronado lettering along the back. The major innovation was the addition of gull-wing doors to the roof. The only significant change to the interior was a couple of bucket seats. Nevertheless, the Deano Toronado, with all its modifications, still displays the original features of the 1966 Toronado design. (source: Motor Trend/Feb.67). That straight frontal sure breathes new light into the idea, ey ? Backs very nice too, remember we had been wondering. Id do conventional lights but this is sure cool. I was glad to see I called the roof panels right too, still dont know if they open with the doors or separately though. It would take one heck of a mechanism to make them work together. Jeffries blow Barris out of the water for tasteful creativity This car, to me is like Carlos - So smooth !
September 29, 200520 yr Author Yo, Sly, I just caught your corrolation with that Special, very Sly you old fox you. Good eye !
September 29, 200520 yr I've always liked those Buicks. This car wears the Carger grille like a Champ. It does the vertical bars of the fascia more justice than the original Mopar. Either way the 60s Toronados were awsome cars.
September 30, 200520 yr Author Oh my, my my my my my, I wonder what Mr Mitchell thought of this. This might have outsharked the shark. I have a goal in my life and it is to reproduce this car in some form. Possibly two forms.
September 30, 200520 yr Author I cant find that site, apparently there is an Austrailian writter ro politician or something that fills all Jefferys searches. I am not good at searches anyhow.
October 6, 200520 yr It almost looks Viking Blue... but I guess the year would be wrong for that... :P
