April 16, 200718 yr Any Virginia residents here or people who can help me? I bought a car on Ebay that I'm picking up in Virginia this friday and I want to know how to do the transfer and get a transit to drive the car home to Canada. See my post in the Oldsmobile section under "bought a 77 Cutlass Supreme" if you want to see this beauty. Thanks
April 17, 200718 yr Author VA DMV Here is a link to the Virginia DMV. I hope this helps out Yes I've read all through the site but I can only find Phone numbers that are 1-800 for information and they don't work from here ( Canada). Feel like making the call for me and asking what the procedure is for out of state residents who buy a car in Virginia? 1-866-368-5463 or 1-800-435-5137, I'd owe you one.
April 18, 200718 yr I went to the contact us page and sent them an e-mail. I'll let you know what they say when they reply to me.

April 18, 200718 yr C'mon guys. He needs numbers for an Auto tag place in Virginia, or do you guys just have the DMV?
April 18, 200718 yr The response from the DMV Thank you for visiting www.dmvnow.com. DMV in VA does not issue 30 day tags. He can visit a VA DMV Customer Service Center and purchase a 3 day owner's trip permit. He will need to provide us with the VIN, make, model and year of the vehicle. He will need to have insurance on the vehicle or purchase a month of Uninsured Motorist Insurance. He will also need a Bill of Sale from the seller. To purchase the trip permit he will need proof of ownership such as a valid assignable title, valid assigned title, registration card, bill of sale or other document showing ownership. The fee for the trip permit is $5. A link to our DMV office locations is below: http://www.dmvnow.com/webdoc/utilities/offices.asp Did you check with your local DMV about how to get the car in to Canada? Where in VA are you getting the car? Honestly the easiest thing to do would be to haul it back on a trailer. Edited April 18, 200718 yr by Screaming Trees
April 18, 200718 yr Did you check with both the Federal governments of the US & Canada about getting it across the border? Since 911, it is not as easy as it use to be.

As long as he has all his proper paperwork (title, bill of sale) signed and dated he should have no problem leaving the US with his car. However I have no idea about getting it into Canada. Will customs want any kind of money upfront for taxes or anything like that? Edited April 18, 200718 yr by Screaming Trees

I don't know, but I do believe emissions and polution regs might be an issue, I don't think the standards are the same between the US & Canada.
April 19, 200718 yr He has to go through some kind of approval process, shouldn't be a big deal for a car that old. Now, if he bought a new GTO, it could be an issue.
April 19, 200718 yr When it says Uninsured Motorist Insurance, technically aren't they being insured in a way. Nice Cutlass though.
April 19, 200718 yr Uninsured Motorist Insurance That is among the dumbest of real terms that I've seen.
April 25, 200718 yr Yeah I was thinking about you too, how did it go? Edited April 25, 200718 yr by Pontiac Custom-S
