General Motors Corp. said today it sold 2.405 cars and trucks worldwide in the second quarter, up slightly from 2.395 million in the same period last year.

While North American unit sales were down 7 percent to 1.2 million vehicles, the Detroit-based automaker gained ground outside the United States, posting a record of 1.39 million vehicles sold. That's up 8 percent, and GM said its non-U.S. sales accounted for 58 percent of its global total in the second quarter.

Sales in specific regions include:
  • A record 293,300 vehicles sold in the Latin America, Africa and Middle East region, with Brazilian sales up 23 percent
  • An 8-percent gain in the Asia Pacific region, where GM sold 338,000 vehicles, including 234,000 in China
  • A 5-percent gain in Europe, where GM delivered 574,000 units.
The results are preliminary and numbers are rounded, the automaker said in a statement.

hrmm... it would be nice to see GM outpacing toyota... Toyota managed to get #1 first quarter... GM getting it second quarter... u know?

cause i think GM's growth in the rest of the world is comming at toyota's loss...

Why is it difficult to understand that TOYOTA like GM is a global corporation with world wide sales. TOYOTA outsells GM in most of Asia except China ( GM is non existent in Japan). Toyota also outsells GM in Africa, Australia and most of Middle East. Your statement cannot be more untrue. TOYOTA like GM is expanding globally and not just in the US. Toyota sold close to 9 million cars and trucks last year with the US only accounting for about 2.3 million of that number.

last i recall Toyota was losing market share in australia and europe... and GM is outpacing global growth excluding the U.S.

but if u can show me that they've been inproving in all both areas i will retract my statement...

Now that Toyota has revealed itself for what it truly is, I would love it if GM and Ford would band together and make a frontal assault on the Japanese market, the only closed market in the world. Even Russia's market is more open than Japan's.

Why are some people so blind to that fact? There are people openly gloating over GM and Ford's losses here while cheering on Japan Inc.

JAPAN IS THE ONLY MARKET IN THE WORLD WHERE NOBODY ELSE SELLS ANYTHING OF CONSEQUENCE. Does that not make anyone wonder WHY?

What is Toyota, truly?

Nobody's cheering anything, and the fact that some of the US's largest corporations have not been able to muster enough political will or influence to knock down those barriers says more about the domestics being stupid, lazy and shortsighted than the Japanese doing anything other than taking advantage of a business opportunity served up to them on a sliver platter. BiZ---this problem has been going on since the 70's...We gave 'em a quota and were sure they'd fail to set up manufacturing here...well, we got what we wished for and now their shoving it down our throats.

Business isn't for the meek, nice or polite---get over it and write a letter to your congressman....

GM could use its tie with DAEWOO to sell fuel efficient cars in JAPAN. Some of the GM DAEWOO cars look very attractive.

How again does that reflect badly on Detroit?!?!!

To think that Congress gives (or gave) three $h!s about Detroit in the first place is shortsighted.

Just like small electronics, our government will let the ***"free"*** market decide Detroit's fate.
