September 26, 200718 yr Ok, I thought about this after my last vacation. I had Grand Prixs back to back in both FL and Atlanta, putting 1,700 miles on the first and 600 on the second one. (I took the Florida car to beautiful Pensacola and back). I've also rented about 10 other Grand Prixs, putting at least 700 miles on each one. When added up, it occurred to me I've exceeded 10,000 miles in rented Grand Prixs. Heck, getting into one and knowing all about them is so reflexive, that if I were to buy one it would be a "non-event." What types of rental "sleds" do you seem to get into most often? Midas Touch with the people at the counter or something? Wow.
September 26, 200718 yr Only ever had one rental, a Neon. I never thought I'd choose an Neon over anything, but I actually helped the guy fish the keys out of it when I found out my other option was an Echo.
September 26, 200718 yr What's with these upgrades? Midas Touch with the people at the counter or something? Wow. Nearly everytime I rent in Florida I get a free upgrade. Every single Deville rental has been an upgrade of some sort either coming from a LeSabre or Bonneville. I'd say two out of four of my Mustang rentals have been free upgrades. I rent a "standard" which is usually listed as a regular mustang and they are nearly always out. The wrangler was an "upgrade" from a Mustang convertible The sable was when the Lincoln dealer seriously f-ed up my power steering pump on my Continental The 300 was an upgrade from a Stratus.. paid extra for that after my last stratus experience. September 26, 200718 yr I've always requested domestic and its netted me: Grand Am GT sedan Monte Carlo LTZ Impala base DeVille base Chevy Classic Dodge Ram (twice...never again) Freestyle And unfortunately... Corolla (thrice) Elantra (suicide) Murano (puke) Altima (bleh)
September 26, 200718 yr Subaru Legacy Pontiac Grand Prix GT Chevy Impala Those are the only ones I can remember. The Subaru was enjoyable to drive, the other two were extremely uncomfortable. The seats, the steering wheel, the door panels, all had very poor ergonomics and materials. I remember the steering wheel of the Grand Prix being particularly unbearable to touch.
September 26, 200718 yr All the times I've rented have been on work/research trips to NM... The first time out, Summer of '05, I got 2 Chevy classics (didn't know I'd have the cost covered for the entire trip, and I returned the first one early). The second time out, Summer of '06, I got a Mustang V6 (had a flat) that got traded for a Montego. The third time out, Spring of '07, I got a Cobalt sedan (stunk like cigarettes and steering wheel made my hands itch) that got traded for a Cobalt coupe.
September 26, 200718 yr In recent years I've stayed with Hertz for personal use-- I've had a lot of Tauruses (maybe 10 times), Sables (5 times), Grand Marquis (4 times), Mustang convertibles (5 times), and Town Cars (4 times). The Grand Marquis or Town Car is now my preferred car of choice for rentals. Over the past 5 years, I used Avis for work trips: 3 Grand Ams, 2 Malibus, 3 Impalas, 1 Monte Carlo, 1 Grand Prix. Around 99-2002, I almost always rented an Intrepid( probably a dozen times), LHS, or Concorde, or 300M. My first car rental ever was a '95 Ciera in Washington DC in '95. Oddities/1 timers I've had include an '04 Ford Thunderbird convertible, an '00 Camaro convertible, an '05 350Z, a Subaru Legacy, a Mazda Protege, a '99 Cougar, a '99 Crown Victoria (black--looked like an FBI car), a couple Focuses, a Neon (horrible--above 45 mph it vibrated terribly), an Escort, and a Contour, a couple of Sebring convertibles, 1 Cavalier (ugh). September 26, 200718 yr I can only think of three, as I rarely rent. Grand Prix Bonneville Grand Marquis These were all early to mid 90's, haven't rented since.
September 26, 200718 yr The first rental car I ever remember us getting was a green mid-90s Grand Am GT sedan when my mom's Celebrity was totaled by a drunk. That one was later swapped for a white Neon sedan until we bought our '87 Ram Van. The more-recent rentals: -red '99 Mercury Sable LS, we rented this after trading-in our return-trip train tickets from Niagara Falls, ON. Drove from Ontario back to Laurel, kinda fun. -green '02 Explorer XLT 4.0L, rented to drive up through New England to Bar Harbor, ME one summer; was an upgrade from a minivan -flat-red (a barf-tastic color) '05 Impala base sedan, for when the Venture was getting some warranty work done -Magnesium '06 Grand Caravan SXT w/Stow 'n Go, when we visited my sister in Charleston 2 summers ago -black '06 Mazda6 i 2.3L, for when the Sonoma was in the shop after Carmax tried to kill it -tan '06 Taurus SE, for when the black 6 was getting an oil change -Lapis Blue '06 Mazda6 s V6, for when the Venture didn't want to cooperate Edit: I forgot about the other Grand Caravan we rented while the Venture was getting a new windshield. So, the Mazda6 and Grand Caravan are tied at two apiece. Edited September 27, 200718 yr by DetroitNut90
September 27, 200718 yr Cars my family has rented on vacations in the past: 1995 Pontiac Trans Sport, gray (New York) 1999 Dodge Intrepid, white (Washington DC / Baltimore / Atlantic City / Philadelphia) 2000 Ford Taurus, red (Seattle / Vancouver) And when I was in Greece: 2006 Renault Clio
September 27, 200718 yr Interesting insight, moltar; what with your consistant snipes at Pontiac being a 'rental car division'... you've personally only rented Pontiacs 10% of the time (less if you include your '1-timers'). Another reason for the cheap shots, then?
