Life's first step... it's all about choices

OK, so I am graduating very soon. I'm still working as co-op now, and have 4 more months of school to go, then it's done for me. So it's time for me to start thinking about what I want to do for full-time, for a living.

A short while ago, I went for an interview with a major financial institution, and I was accepted and offered a position as a trainee analyst. However, the job isn't really exactly what I want to do for a living, *cough* programming and application development *cough* *cough*, and I honestly can say I totally suck at the stuff. I haven't taken the offer yet, I still have until December to decide whether I want to take the offer. The lady who interviewed me did tell me I did have opportunities within to switch to where I want to do more on the network side, though.

On the other hand, my current boss, is in talks with his managers to try to create a position for me as full time. Where I work now is also a major financial institution, but from what I heard, the pay isn't as great as the other one I interviewed with. But the work I do now is what I absolutely love doing, networks and infrastructure security, and where I want my career to be. However, up to this point, it's unclear whether it will work out, though. There was a management meeting yesterday, and my boss will be back tomorrow. So everything here will be clear when I go to work. The corporate culture here also seems to work out for me too, and I'm pretty comfortable with the environment, since I've been working here for almost a year now, and I'm starting to know people around.

So now I'm at crossroads. Should I go for a job with higher pay, and suck up to do what I don't really want to, or should I go for somewhere familiar but with less pay? So far everyone I've asked seems to tell me to go for the higher paying job, and it does seem my family will be somewhat angry if I don't take that offer. I know it's my life, but I do have to care what they think at times. Anyone with some other insight?

Money does not equal happiness...

Stay with the job you're happy at. Then, when the time comes you can pursue a better option. (Pay-wise)

You'd smother yourself.

Toni, after reading your account, I agree with others here who say stay where you are for now.

Stick to how you feel and stay where you are right now, but always keep an eye on opportunities. Who knows? In a few years time you might be making more money within that (or a similar) corporate culture you feel good being a part of.

I agree with everyone else...if you can stay-do it. I'm betting that there will not be that big of a difference in money anyways...

Plus, it sounds like you could learn some more there....
