November 29, 200718 yr Yeah, this is interesting. Ever tried to start your car while it's running? Our 03 Cav does that now-but this is when you start it. If you turn it more than a second too long-SCREECH! It never has done this before...expect for some reason-it started this week. Other than that-no other issues? Anybody else had this problem? Very, very strange...
November 30, 200718 yr Sounds like something with the starter, like its not disengaging immediately. Either physically, or something electrical connected to the starter circuit. I never go underhood of anything computer-contolled, which places me the better part of 30 years away with my point of reference here.

I was thinking starter too, but it seems a bit early for it to go, as it has been just fine up till now. Being 4 years old with less than 40k, it kinda surprises me... Though I think I'm going to test it.....
December 1, 200718 yr Sounds odd to me, I would figure a 2003 vehicle would have a lockout of some sort so it can't engage the starter while running. I've seen starters installed slightly off that wouldn't "allow" the starter to disengage (mechanically) or starters which would continue to engage even after release of the key due to the bendix.
December 6, 200718 yr Sounds to be like a possible problem with the Neutral Safety Switch. Just like its supposed to not allow the car to crank in any gear other than neutral or park, it can also act as a start disable switch to keep you from engaging the starter with the engine running. Although it could also be a problem with the starter itself and mileage and age unfortunately don't play a factor in when they fail. The original starter on my truck went from 1976 when the truck was purchased to Christmas 1995....and about 150,000mi...so age and miles don't play that big of a factor.
December 10, 200718 yr Author We played with the starter, solenoid, nothing. Cleaned em' up. It started when it first started getting cold. After all that-it has stopped....about a week now. Weird, huh?
December 15, 200718 yr next time it does it, beat it with a hammer and call it dirty names, always works for my truck...
