It looks like GM will keep the title this year after all. But this will be a dogfight for some time to come.

next year will see Malibu and Traverse holding the line for Chevy. Toyota's next big releases are Corolla and Matrix and then Prius and Sienna some time after that...

Car sales in general are going to take a major ass beating next year as the ecomony takes a nice dump next year....

( I know I don't have to get the details... )

The battle next year for these two companies will come down to the small and mid sized cars....

and who has the better line up.....

Can some put the first post in a chart or something to make it easier to understand with everything labeled so I can understand it?

This is the same trend I warned about in May. GM needs to get its act together on Chevrolet. Far better to deemphasize Saturn, Saab and Pontiac while piling some cash into shortening Malibu's, Impala's, Aveo's and Cobalt's lifecycles:

Wake up GM: the Toyota nameplate is getting closer and closer to outselling Chevrolet! Only about 10,000 unit difference in April.

Trying to save Buick and Pontiac isn't worth Chevrolet falling behind Toyota in sales.

Save Chevrolet before it's too late!!!

Thank you now I see. So Chevrolet is still Americas nu. 1 brand? Ahh then what is the sales fight for nu. 1 automaker for when GM I sure sells more cars in the USA than Toyota right? Or is it for world wide? When the say Toyota could become the biggest automaker? Someone care to explain?

GM is not in danger of losing its #1 NA sales status anytime soon. That's not the issue, yet. What's more important is Chevrolet's trend of losing market share while the Toyota brand (Toyota Motor Sales USA minus Scion minus Lexus) increases its sales and market share. People like a winner that's why Chevrolet was America's "default" choice for so many years. The average car buyer could care less about "GM" versus "Toyota Motor." They look at nameplates.

Thanks for the explination but what about GM not being number 1 and Toyota taking them over is that in over-all sales? (World Wide) Or US sales or what?

That's worldwide sales (all brands for each company). Essentially, they're neck and neck at this point with GM gaining some momentum.
