1993 blazer 4wd not engaging!!!

Featured Replies

ok so i have a 1993 chevy 4dr blazer 4x4.

i have had the vehicle for a little over a year

and when i got the vehicle, the 4wd worked fine.

but then i started to have problems with going from 2hi to 4hi.

i have an electric switch (not the manual)

and for the longest time it was stuck in 4hi.

but ive also noticed that it is not engaged in 4wd at all.

is there perhaps a bad fuse?

a bad transfer case?

is it an easy fix?

i dont plan on keeping the vehicle much longer, so i dont want to put too much money into it.

i do hear it trying to engage sometimes but it never takes.

and help would be much appreciated.

The trouble with these systems is almost always electrical. I would trace the wiring and look for a short (checking the fuses is a good idea as well). I had this trouble with a 1990 Silverado - it turned out to be a short in a wire under the carpet.

There's a vacuum actuator that engages the 4wd on these vehicles thats on the front axle. When it gets cold, old or just doesn't feel like working anymore, it won't lock the front hubs. They run about $60 plus labor to install. You can install one in your driveway if you have ramps, but they are easier to get to get to on a lift.

That seems like a common problem...

That's more than likely what it is. I've seen the part go bad quite often. The only other thing would be electrical, but normally its in the vacuum switch.
