December 24, 200718 yr I finished my Christmas shopping at the Phesant Lane Mall in Nashua, New Hampshire at about 6:30pm on Friday. Left the mall in the Datsun, pulled out onto Daniel Webster Highway a few minutes later at a green light & put on my left blinker. I'm just about to turn, having yielded to a few cars leaving the Costco across the street, but just as I start rolling at about 15mph I slam on my brakes because I realise that one car in particular is not stopping at the red, in fact a set of HIDs is headed for me at a very scarry rate. I had about 1.5 seconds to react, I pull back in my seat and push the shifter into neutral, for a split second I think, this LOOKS scarry but he's got plenty of room to swerve around me... right?! Nope. Not only was this guy speeding by about 15mph, he also blatantly ran a red light, but worst of all he was somehow completely distracted and never even tapped his brakes. The impact was almost exactly head-on, our drivers sides hit, I think he was going about 40mph or 45mph, it felt like 70mph but either way he never even applied his brakes. The Datsun's unibody did an excellent job of protecting me, not as well as the 2003 BMW 328xi touring's but than again if I had a B-body or some other big BOF vehicle I would have been better off. I got spun around and pushed back halfway across the intersection. My adrenaline was pumping hardcore. My back, neck, wrists, and esp. knees are seriously hurting now but at the sceene of the accident I made the mistake of saying I thought I was alright. The other driver cut up his scalp pretty bad on the Bimmer's A-pillar, he was bleeding pretty bad. Thank got the cops documented everything and I have a witness, the guy who was behind the BMW stopped and gave me his info, saying that he can testify that the guy ran a red, was speeding & obviously distracted since he made no attempt to swerve around me even though there was plenty of space. I'm hurting, tired and sleep depraved from my three jobs & overtime at UPS, but that's the basics & here's some photos:
December 24, 200718 yr oh my... im so sorry to hear about this... glad to hear you're mostly okay tho...
December 24, 200718 yr Aww, that poor Datsun! Stupid f@#king dumb $h!s who deserve nothing more than to be killed slowly with rusty knife. I'm so sorry this happened to you Sixty8, and that you're injured by it, hopefully you get all of the compensation you need and then some.
December 24, 200718 yr Wow. Glad you're ok with no serious injuries, and hopefully the aches and pains will go away soon. The crumple zone in the Datsun did its job. And you also had a minor accident just a couple weeks ago, if I recall correctly.
December 24, 200718 yr Jeezus Sixty8, I'm so sorry to hear this, but glad to hear you're still in one piece. Here's to a speedy recovery.
December 24, 200718 yr Sucks, because from what I can see the BMW doesn't look like it's nearly as damaged.
December 24, 200718 yr Sixty8, thank God you're ok. My prayers go out to you. I hope that this all gets cleaned up as quickly as possible.
December 24, 200718 yr Even though its always sad to see... but cars can be replaced... people cannot.... your ok and thats what matters most. Hope your feeling better.
December 24, 200718 yr Sorry to hear you got hurt. And during peak at UPS. Not cool. BTW: What do you do at UPS? I've been pushing 55 hours a week recently not including lunch, as a "part-time" Supervisor. I look forward to Christmas being over. For those that don't work for UPS. We at UPS do WAY more than any of you could imagine to make sure you get your gifts on time. If you see a UPS employee (Driver, Loader, Supervisor, Manager, Accoutant), make sure to thank them for all their hard work. They more than deserve it.
December 24, 200718 yr Holy crap, Sixty8 ... very sorry that happened to ya. Glad nobody was seriously injured. But, that sucks big time . December 24, 200718 yr Oh no, man. I hope you heal up quickly. If this happened on Friday, hopefully you saw a doctor asap. That little Datsun served you well. Did you have two of those? Is that the one I rode in when you came down to visit? The BMW is most likely hiding some structural damage, looking at what it did to your car, it has to be. I hope everything gets worked out quickly for you, Sly. Take care of yourself, kind sir.
December 24, 200718 yr Damn! That 3er took it like a champ! Glad to hear you made it out of that in one piece. Here's to hoping you feel better and have a good x-mas.
December 24, 200718 yr Damn! F'in idiot trashed your car. People like that shouldn't own nice cars. I'll echo the above, go see a doc and make sure your going to be ok with no lasting effects. Give that SOB a good fleecing if you can.
December 24, 200718 yr Wow, Sixty. Sorry to hear this. I'm glad you are OK. Looks like your Datsun took one for the team. She's probably gone, but you're still here and that's the important thing.
December 24, 200718 yr Damn! F'in idiot trashed your car. People like that shouldn't be allowed to drive cars. I'll echo the above, go see a doc and make sure your going to be ok with no lasting effects. Give that SOB a good fleecing if you can. Fixed, and since he was driving a BMW, odds are you can get a good chunk out of his stupid ass.
December 24, 200718 yr Damn Sly, that sucks..... The most important thing is that you are ok (and hopefully only sore) Poor Datsun...but at least it took care of you... Hope you feel better soon..... I think that guy should buy you a new Datsun....
December 24, 200718 yr Sorry to hear about this. That car had character, something you can say for about 10 percent of Japanese cars. Hope you aren't hurtin' too much. I almost can't help but think that you might have jinxed yourself in the car-in-a-ditch spotting thread. Anyway, get well soon and sorry your little sport sedan is destroyed.
December 24, 200718 yr Glad to read that you are okay, but I think you should see a doctor about your pains. And a Lawyer.
December 24, 200718 yr Damn Sly, that sucks..... The most important thing is that you are ok (and hopefully only sore) Poor Datsun...but at least it took care of you... Hope you feel better soon..... I think that guy should buy you a new Datsun.... Or at least a new Camry!
December 25, 200718 yr I'm so sorry. Glad that you are OK. I know how you feel because I've been into about 3 Accidents until now. 2 with my very first car('92 Sunbird. Once, where I hit the on-comming bus, even so, the car moved and engine had no damage, the front part got totalled, and once getting hit by this guy who ignored the stop sign), and once in my current 99 Grandam(where I had nowhere to go since the girl in front of me hit the girl in front of her in the very busy highway). Though I managed to walk out un-scathed on all occasions. I wish the speedy recovery for you and I hope you get better soon. It sucks that this kinda accident actually happend on these great holiday season, well, any accidents should never happen in the first place but, some crazy drivers just never learn. God Bless. December 26, 200718 yr Author UPS really kicked my a$$ monday morning, I realised that almost everything that was stiff was going to get worse before it gets better. I went to a doctor and I think once I get the insurance paperwork going I'm visiting the doctor again. My shoulder, neck, lower back, knees & wrists are all in a lot of pain. ------ The only Toyopet I'd like to own post 2000GT would be an early '70s hardtop Corona with a straight-6 and manual trans. I'd take a MINT one of those to replace my Datsun... but after an accident like this (yes thank God Sofia was not with me) I think I'll be moving on to another BOF car, or at least another German tank like my wife's diesel Mercedes. There's a 300TDT wagon I've got my eye on, and also a '92 Roadmaster that I'm going to look at a few towns away. Now if money was no obect, or at least if I had like $50K for a new one I'd buy an early 1930s Pontiac or some other pre-war car and have a professionally installed roll-cage installed, throw on a set of radials & a modern mp3=compatible radio so I could daily drive it!
December 26, 200718 yr Both the Roadmasher or the Mercedes Wagon would be great but I'd lean towards the Buick myself.
December 26, 200718 yr Glad to hear you're OK Sixty8. It's too bad the Datsun suffered at the hands of dime-a-dozen 3-series. It's sad to see rare old cars bite the dust because of somebody's negligence. Hopefully your pain dulls and you find a new car soon!
December 26, 200718 yr OUCH! The wagon thing sounds like just the ticket, but get to a doctor quickly... Chris
December 27, 200718 yr Author I'd like to tear appart the Datsun, take the good parts off of it. At this point I'm more concerned with my health but idealy I'd save the engine, trans, rear end, doors, trunk, glass, & most importantly the voice-box computer. WMJ: That '64 Cadillac seems to good to be true, the '67 Volvo with 300K miles is a testament to those old tanks, (try that with a modern FWD 850) and the '79 Dump Truck makes me laugh, just the other day I pointed out a yellow '85 JUST LIKE THAT ONE to Julie and said I'd like to be able to justify delivering Chinese food in THAT, or better yet a chopped down Peterbilt 379 with a sleeper-cab. Back to the accident, I'm in talks with a lawyer. After all the B.S. I had to deal with and the other guys' blatant lies I've decided I need to seek legal council.
December 28, 200718 yr I agree with WMJ, let us all know how it turns out (but wait until it's over). Posting the blow-by-blow could hurt your prospects.
December 29, 200718 yr Author All three of those are delicious!!! (agreed, Camino... the whole thing with the lawyer is such a pain)
December 29, 200718 yr Time to get rid of the old cars and get something modern and sensible. Camry? RAV-4?
December 29, 200718 yr Author Time to get rid of the old cars and get something modern and sensible. Camry? RAV-4? How about a '37 Plymouth? Seriously.
December 29, 200718 yr Author The last photos of the Datsun before it was wrecked by that bonehead: Taken exactly 26 hours prior to the accident. I managed to get around in this little RWD four door Fairlady through mud, sleet, ice, snow, blizzard, two floods & several ice storms over the past 30 months, and in the end a guy in an AWD car with all the modern saftety devices slams into me head on without even attempting to slow down, swerve around, or otherwise avoid me. Red means STOP, a$$hole. Edited December 29, 200718 yr by Sixty8panther
December 29, 200718 yr Modern advances in safety and conveniences don't fix inattention and carelessness.
December 30, 200718 yr Sly I wish you a speedy and full recovery, and as much as I dislike lawyers, its probably a good idea to go see one on this ocassion. Keep us informed.
December 30, 200718 yr Modern advances in safety and conveniences don't fix inattention and carelessness. Ironically, some people tend to think that the modern gidgets DO fix inattention and carelessness. But, too many times, I've seen collisions to prove otherwise..... Keep us informed, Sly. And, oh yeah, I'll take that Buick . January 2, 200818 yr Author Yeah the only "modern" car I'll even consider is a B-body, (esp. with an LT1) or perhaps a hardtop Mercedes from the 80s.... also I'm investigating a BMW 524 diesel in R.I. But chances are I'll end up buying a car older than the Datsun I'm replacing. Saving tons on sales tax, excise tax, insurance, maintenance & other expenses are the perks to classic car ownership, but most of all they suck a lot less!
January 2, 200818 yr Another late 70's Cadillac would do you nicely. Too bad you sold the yellow one... Chris
