Friday evening after work, I stopped in at a new local diner to have supper. It had been a long time since lunch, and I was feeling pretty hungry. As I was waiting for my food, I caught myself staring at my server as she took care of her other tables. I realized my eyes were locked on her every move as the minutes ticked by, my table and my stomach empty. When she assured me "yours will be out soon!" with a little knowing smile, I became amused at myself and realized I probably had a half-crazed, desperate, "FEED ME!" look in my eyes, a look this waitress had probably felt dozens of times before.

I know the feeling. Last night I went to Lucy's, this awesomely good Mexican place at Pico and Union, after a night of drinking and it seemed like forever before my food came! I was doing the same thing...just staring at the counter waiting for the bell to ring.

I remember I got a server's number once because of that....

I think if you would have asked nicely, she would have given you a little dessert.

Blu doesnt like pie for dessert. He prefers canollis.

Phillipe's, originally owned by a Frenchman in what was once the French District of Los Angeles (replaced by the 101 freeway), made a sandwich where the baguette was dipped in the au jus from the meat. Because the baguette is "dipped" in the jus, and Phillipe was French, this type of sandwich became known as a "French dip." Commonly in America, you'll have the au jus on the side, and you're served the sandwich dry to dip it in the jus yourself. Both are French dips, but the latter isn't the authentic way.

French Dip...yum!

I'll try to remember this if I do end up having to go to California soon, as I expect I will.

My only beef with the place is that is smells like hay inside..

That's from all those sheep running around in there, trying to escape certain patrons' amourous advances.

However, that photo of the sandwich looks delicious... and I too love hot food. I eat the wasabi with my fork, not bothering to mix it into my soy sauce, and I love Chinese mustard.

Well, off the top of my head, I'd guess the "hay" smell is actually the layer of sawdust that covers the floor. This place hasn't changed one bit since Aliso St. was demolished for the 101 and Phillipe's moved to Alameda. Their coffee is still 9 cents a cup.
