Porsche developing its own Golf-based entry model?

If Porsches are good, more Porsches are better, especially if it means Stuttgart's model range will expand downward. Rumors are swirling that Porsche is working on its own version of Volkswagen's Golf/Rabbit, which may be an opening salvo in a Porsche assault on BMW's slice of the pie with its 1 Series. An über-bunny above the R32 is certainly appealing, but we hope the styling smoothes some from from the melty rendering. There's potential there, but it could turn ugly fast like the Panamera four-door "coupe". Auto Bild is usually pretty close to the mark, however, so it wouldn't be surprising to see this very vehicle sometime around 2012. We're going to guess that most people will just see its taillights.

As weird as this may sound, it seems Porsche is working on a Porsche badged Volkswagen Golf for 2012. Now, we know that the Volkswagen Golf is a huge success, but a Porsche version of the car seems like a totally absurd idea; unless of course Porsche is postioning itself to become more mainstream and compete with BMW.

The picture below is on the cover of the new AutoBild magazine. The caption next to it read (in German) ”kompakte geheim-projekte bis 2012. der porsche-golf.” That translates to “compact secret projects until 2012. the Porsche-Golf.”

You know, I believe this car has been a long-time coming from Porsche. I remember reading rumors back in 2003 in an issue of Road & Track that described this very car and the article in that magazine had a very similar rendering to the last one pictured, especially the DLO. Interesting ...

Apparently, no one at Porsche has a long enough memory to recall the VW-Porsche 914 and the hatred it bred among Porschephiles. (I find it strange that I am the one to put this together, since the 914 predates me. But I digress...)

Yep, Porsche's gradually putting their brand on the short road to irrelevance - first the Cayenne, then the Panamera, and now this "Golfrrera"?

At least Lotus has managed to pull themselves back together - the world still needs at least one company building nothing but real, attainable, uncompromised sports cars.

Gotta diversify in these times. It's OK for a sports car brand to take its image beyond douchey two-seaters. While the SUV is sacrilege (though no one complained when Lambo did one), I'm all for this kind of car here.

Ugh. Why Porsche, why? If they want something entry-level, how about something like the Solstice with a high-power 4cyl?

That is way to funny. I am all for bringing back the 924/928/944/968 but not a GOLF based anything for Porsche it needs RWD. Talk about away to dilute your brand. This is like what Cadillac did with the Cimaron but only WAY worse.

Porshce is the winningest brand at LeMans... they have a rich

history of building amazing race cars and road cars that

replicate the same formula... an enrty level POrsche? Ok, why

not a $18,000 Corvette? or a $30,000 Lamborghini...? Stupid.

Now Porsche can be the most over rated small car too!

Actually the CRX is a pretty sporty ride, it may not go 0-60 in 4.1, but they handle quite well. Same with the Prelude, Cooper, Scirocco, and several other FWD cars over the years.
