According to Nissan, the diesel engine slated to power the Maxima could come equipped with a manual transmission as its only option. We honestly can't imagine Nissan going through with this idea.

All their sales won't be gone... but diesel sales will be pretty crappy. The gas engine will still be paired with the CVT.

Hey... not my fault I never had a chance to learn. My father got rid of his last stick-shift eight years before I got a license.

In Europe (at least Great Britain where I get the mags from) there are many diesel combos that are NOT available with an automatic.....period.....

But stick-shift penetration rates have historically been way higher over there than here (as we all know already....)

Yeah..I'm always amazed by what is available in diesels in the UK....like a BMW 3-series convertible diesel. Or a Merc CLK diesel hardtop. I'd love to see GM make some bold moves and offer a diesel Camaro or US-market diesel CTS..

We all know that if there weren't such stringent EPA regs and if people didn't remember American-made diesels in the 70s/80s that there would be many more diesel engines here from companies not named Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz.

Yes, unfortunately. My '80s diesel experience was a good one overall, though my Escort's engine was by Mazda.

Yeah...it's the traffic that kills the fun of a stick... esp. the darn stop and go freeway congestion and stop and go city traffic..I love a manual, but am content with an automatic in my Jeep..

Bitch bitch bitch. I drive a manual everyday to and from work through rush hour traffic, and there is always stop and go sections at least twice a day. I manage just fine. You guys are wusses.
