The following quote greeted us on the company computer system the other day:

Always remember the distinction between contribution and commitment. Take the matter of bacon and eggs. The chicken makes a contribution. The pig makes a commitment.

--- John Mack Carter

But ... isn't "contribution" a way to show "commitment"?

Thoughts?

when i first saw the title I instantly thought charity vs socialism. the end result is the same, but choice is the difference. you may give to charities that help "world poverty", but when that choice is taken away as a "world poverty tax", that's not charity anymore.

edit:

Catholics are supposed to believe in charity, but socialism is evil because you no longer need to care about the cause.

can be misinterpreted, but

socialists take your possessions with "force"

capitalists protect their possessions with "force"

I don't know who John Mack Carter is, but I think his statement is pretty silly. If the 'commitment' requires you to lose your life as it did the pig, then you are unable to make any future contributions or commitments and are of no use to anyone. So, the lesson for me is that you must have balance in all areas of your life and don't be afraid to say 'No' when you need to.

I've heard that quote before, it was funny. I think we might be trying to look deep into it.

See...these are the kinda quotes I like. On the surface, it sounds pretty interesting ... but ... the more you look at it and THINK about it, the more weird/off it becomes. Which is cool in a way, because that means you've thought and (perhaps) re-evaluated a few things in the process.
