Toyota says...

"On another front, Toyota’s president has just told reporters his company plans to move up the launch of a test fleet of plug-in Priuses to 2009, whereas previously these were expected to arrive in 2010. He also indicated Toyota is planning for mass production of electric cars in the "early part of next decade."

Lutz' response

GM Vice-Chairman Bob Lutz responded to this news in an interview with reporters.

He indicated that the race between Toyota and GM to create a plug-in car is “meaningless” as the Chevy Volt and plug-in Prius are too different to compare. He cited the very short range in the Prius and it’s need for gas to go any significant distances.

He also said he expects Toyota 2009 plug-in test fleet would be a very small number. On the contrary, the production-version Volt however will be in a large test fleet by late 2009.

Prius still won't be using Lithium Ion batteries which is the major stumbling point for any EV vehicle, so the Pruis may get here first, but the Volt is still more noteworthy.

He failed to cite the differences in cost too.

nobody know what either car will sell for. But as they say... you get what you pay for.
