I have a question about the previous gen Malibu. Was it a Gm pairing with Toyota that shared a platform? And if so which one and which was the Malibu based off of. Im having a debate with somone on another forum and I need a quick answer lol.

The Malibu did not share anything with Toyota. Instead, the GEO Prizm which later became the Chevy Prizm shared the same components with the Toyota Corolla.

No Toyota connection. The Malibu shared its architecture with the Grand Am and Olds Alero.

Negatory on the interbreeding of any Malibu. The only recent GM-Toyota joint products were the Chevy Prizm (Corolla) and Pontiac Vibe (Matrix). The '97-03 Malibu is based off the P-90 platform - modified N-body, I believe - shared with the later Grand Am and Alero and rebadged as the '97 Olds Cutlass.

Yeah, when I first saw a Camry and a Malibu side-by-side in a parking lot when I was a lot younger, I thought GM were rebadging Camrys. It's probably because they just somehow appear so similar on the outside for some reason. And that is not a good thing, in my opinion. No wonder the last-gen Malibu gained the nickname "Mall-ibu" from the press. Although it wasn't a bad car, it was certainly one boring appliance. And, to me, the only real high point of the last-gen Malibu were the SEMA performance variants, which should have been built. It could have pumped some life into the Mall-ibu.

Chevrolet was targeting the Camry when it designed the Malibu...hence the circular Malibu logo, the Toyota-esque taillight treatment, and similar headlight shape.

The Nova was based on the Toyota Sprinter, a sister car to the Corolla. That looks like an E8, the first-generation fwd Corolla/Sprinters (the E8 coupes stayed on the older rwd platform).
