(Excuse me in advance if I'm coming across as some kind of car hippie. :P ) Anybody ever wonder what would happen if every car company in the world combined to make one single company? GM, Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Ford, DCX, Hyundai, etc. co-existing and living in harmony. Would it end pissing matches among car enthusiasts? Would the auto industry become less of a raging battlefield? Would it improve international relations? (This may be a stretch.) Share your thoughts.

I hope nothing like that happens. And this isn't the GM enthusiast in me talking. Having one company in a partcular industry means no competition, meaning they could put out spectacularly lousy cars and trucks for ridiculously high prices, and we'd HAVE to buy it, because they're the only game in town. I can, however, see the autootive industry eventually parallel the computer industry, where various components are made outside of the car companies, who put them together in the most appealing package possible. For example, GM, Toyota, and BMW could someday purchase engines, transmissions, braking systems, and steering systems from an independent third party like Aisin, Allison, or Brembo, and put them into a body/platform that's designed in-house.

We would have one car. It would be a gutless, designless, soulless sedan. It would have no style, no class, no performance. It would get average fuel economy, average roominess, average handling, and no special features. It would be sold in Maytag low gloss white with gray cloth seats.

It would be called...

That my friend is called Communism. Or in some circles Socialism. No competition = crappy products! BTW: I've often though about what it woudl be like if there was a Global Big three. Here's my concept: 1. GM-Toyota-VW-Audi-Porsche-Lamborghini-Skoda-Suzuki-SAAB-Daewoo-Subaru-Citroen-AlfaRomeo-Seat-Bentley 2. Ford-Mo.Co.-BMW-Mazda-Nissan-Renault-Volvo-Kia-Jaguar-AstonMartin-LandRover-Mini-Ferrari-RollsRoyce 3. Chrysler-Mercedes-Honda-Mitsubishi-Peugeot-Fiat-Lancia-Hyundai-McLaren-Smart-Daihatsu-MG/Rover-Pagani-Lada Just a crazy idea. :P Of course I hope to god something like this does not actualy happen!

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't want this either. Competition is what makes life worth living after all. I just thought it'd be interesting to think "what if...?". ;)

The same thing that happens with every other monopoly. The consumers get screwed.
I'm not worried about it, it's called a Monopoly and the only one allowed to have that is Toyota. Just ask the U.S. Government :P
