November 17, 200817 yr "Please give me a lobotomy, I'll buy a Camry for its superior fuel economy" ------ Okay, so GM is taking a thrashing in the media, all I hear is how much they suck... and yet a few days ago I was in traffic in the M.B., at a red light, nex to a mid-90s MR2 turbo. Made me think. Toyota, the 'Chosen One' the Holy Grail of automotive answers to questions most people have never asked, the mcanufacturer that for some reason gets pro-bono filatio from 92% of all "media" in and out of the Automotive Journalism field... let's recap what exactly they have been doing with themselves in the past decade. The gross MR-Spyder replaced the MR2 and shortly after dropped off planet earth. The Supra was killed... to make way for the Solara...? The last gen. Celica, one of the few, and I mean FEW interesting Toyota designs that has been sold in about three decades was killed off to help boost Scion sales.... Speaking of which, what the hell kind of bull$h! is the Scion brand... it was meant to bring in the youth market w/ funky designs & affordability but seems like they managed to "out-Buick" Buick as far as reeling in the over-60 crowd... I think most Scion xBs are owned by old folks who just wanted a cheap minivan. Why is it that the Sheeple of the USA do not ever see the stupidity and hypocracy of ToyoPET inc.? What the hell kind of unAmerican mentality drives this hate towards all thing American while fueling our self destruction, esp. the economic war that Japan has been winning for the past 30 years!
November 17, 200817 yr The Scion tC is kind of nice and a little sporty. But it is pretty bland looking at the same time. The interior is a typical Toyota poor design. The Lexus IS is also kind of nice and sporty, but also suffers from a poor interior, and the exterior hasn't aged well. Toyota is just such a boring company, I think I'm ready for a nap now after talking about them... ZZzzzzz.....
November 17, 200817 yr The last generation Celica wasn't that good of a car either. Drive one hard and then drive an Integra GSR hard or an Integra Type R hard, or a 99-2000 civic SI hard, or a 2002-2005 Cicic SI hard... You'll find out what a piss poor design the Celica really is. The Honda producsts WAY outclass (by several orders of magnatude) the DSM MITSU cars, and yet the DSM outclasses the Celica IMHO. Chris
November 18, 200817 yr Author I terms of styling, the last gen. Celica was one of the most original, interesting and cohesive designs that has been sold in the USA by Toyota in over two decades, Those high cut headlights and the very unorthodox sculpting of the car's flanks, the stretched canvas greenhouse... I gotta tell you a few Celica GT-S magazine cutouts graced my walls back in college... sharing room with 1969 Camaros & 1932 Ford Hot Rods. There is not ONE car today sold in the USA by ToyoPet Inc. outside of the IS-series & GS-series lexus products that has any worth to me. The average Toyota product in 2008 honestly gets about a D+ from me... where as the last gen. Celica was a product that at least interested me enough to take a second glance.
November 18, 200817 yr The IS is pretty nice. I really have a strange attraction to the GS. The LS is handsome if a bit bland. The tC is alright. The Celica was nothing if not original. I really liked the last Supra. That's it. Edited November 18, 200817 yr by Dodgefan
November 18, 200817 yr Author If they were not such rusty bucket of flimsy bolts and thin sheet metal I'd be tempted to pick up a 1970-1973 Celica hardtop... that mini-Mopar styling has always tickled my fancy. It's like a Mini-Charger Clown Car. The fastback looked the best but both it and the notch-back were pillarless hardtops.
November 22, 200817 yr Author Anyone else think the current Sequoia's nose looks like a Chinese knock-off of the Dodge Ram...?

He was riding with a friend onto a military base. They ran over a speed bump and the spare tire went through the trunk floor (Florida car, not that rusty) in front of a whole bunch of guys. The SCCA team I used to crew for ran an old 82 Toyota Corolla 2 door. Not a bad car, but much better sense of design in 82 than they have now, IMHO. Chris
November 22, 200817 yr Anyone else think the current Sequoia's nose looks like a Chinese knock-off of the Dodge Ram...? I think the whole Sequioa thing looks terrible. The Suburban is much better and much cheaper. Chris

November 24, 200817 yr The GS is overrated. I've been in one and it's nothing special. Give me a Cadillac STS any day. I don't really mind the IS, and the LS has grown on me, but pretty much everything else from the Toyota lineup is a snooze-fest or downright hideous. The Tundra looks so ugly on the road...it reminds me of a slug.
November 24, 200817 yr One final toyota note...during the last SCCA autocross of the year, my son Joel was riding with a female driver in a Toyota MR2. Everytime she got up on the wheel to go around a corner, she screamed "turn, BITCH, Turn" at her car. Maybe it's just me, but a female race car driver calling her car a bitch and telling it to scream strikes me as funny. Chris
