I was searching around like always and came across a 1988 Chevrolet Suburban 2500 2WD with a 454 BIG BLOCK and the Turbo 400. This black beauty has NO RESERVE, and only 67,500 miles on her. Bidding is around 1,200 currently. If I was closer and was half nuts I would snag this thing for a road tripper. Here is the link... I am sure XP, and 68 will fall in love with this thing.

Looks nice, but 2wd doesn't cut it 'round here.

As long as it's an '88 and not an '87 or prior...if you want it make sure it doesn't have side-saddle fuel tanks.

She IS a beauty, but disqualified for a few reasons:

1. Distance. It's 3500 miles away.

2. TAILGATE! This is a big no-no for anybody that uses their Suburban like a Suburban is meant to be used. Slamming these tailgates does wonders for the delicate electrical and mechanical components inside that raise and lower that rear window. Sure, there's an access panel, but at $120 a pop for rear window motors I'm all set. Plus, here in New England, the bottom sill would rot out so fast that in about two years I would open it and it would fall onto the ground.

That was the '73-87 pickups that had those, I thought the 'burban always had the tank in the back center..

I would prefer barn doors because it means no struts to wear out. However I'm not hardcore enough to turn down such a clean example if I were in the market for one.

You would be correct. Plus the Suburbans didn't move to the GMT400 platform until '92MY.

I'm confused... what struts? The only thing I can think of is that you're thinking of the 90's style tailgate 'burbans where the upper glass swings up (with struts) and the tailgate swings down. The 80's burbans have roll-down glass in the tailgate.

I personally prefer the tailgates because I can attach a vise to them and use them as a mobile work bench, but to each his own.

It is a personal pref. thing, I don't care. I like each for different reasons.

Irrelevant. Are you really trying to argue that a vehicle with the gas tank mounted OUTSIDE THE FRAME isn't negligent design? And yes, GM was aware of this by the time they were designed and put into production.
