When I was a kid in the Rust Belt, probably 90% of the cars on the road were RWD. People didn't need FWD, they had snow tires and knew how to drive in the snow.

FWD is more space efficient and lighter than RWD in most applications.

Not everyone is qualified to drive in the snow and some of the down right hate and fear doing that chore, yet everyone has privilege to drive while it is snowing and have a fun vehicle, therefore people must have FWD and FWD biased AWD.
