"one of the nominees in the penultimate round of voting for the Car of the Century"

This car predates Chevrolet's "Super Sport" moniker of 1961

but it's name is actually an acronym for "Super-Sport, Short

Wheelbase"

About three dozen were built, many of the lost over the

years at the hands of race car drivers, yet more than twice

that number exist today. more than half of them being

replicas, some of the replicas using original parts.

The most famous one of all is owned by someone who also

owns a McLaren F1 & Bugatti Veyron.

The brilliant engineer who designed it went on to found his

OWN car company.

The car in question has more LITERS of displacement than

number of cylinders!

Not Alfa.

This manufacturer technically has three names.

Hmmm...3 names....something from Aston Martin Lagonda a long time ago in a land far, far away?

Jag-u-war had an SS back in the '30s.

But;...

I suspect you are talking about the Mercedes-Benz SSK from the late 20s-early 30s. Designed by Ferdinand Porsche. I have a Lindberg 1:25th scale model of one of these to build eventually.

The Daimler-Benz Mercedes SSK.

7.0 liter German Inline-6 + forced induction = A force to be reckoned with.
