Screen resolution.

The problem I have is that so much internet content requires a resolution that makes a page impossible for me to read on my monitor.

Is the answer buying a larger monitor?

Its a real PITA.

Larger monitor is a good idea, you can also increase the text size.

I have both brands and they are very good.

I have an old Sony 17" that works great.

My other issue is that most monitors really hurt my eyes, so I'm betting those cheapies won't cut it.

Settings> Advanced > DPI setting (this enlarges text and icons)

Display Properties > Appearance > Advanced (here you can change individual font sizes, colors, and styles)

I have boxes of stuff such as this dating back to a Panasonic 9" DVD player received as a Christmas gift in 2001.

Users manual should have an explantion, but also Google your card/motherboard (whatever sends out the HDMI) to see if there are any people having problems, or if you need BIOS updates. Also, if it's a motherboard based HDMI, you may need to change some jumpers around, too.
