I love this ad. If I was thinking about buying a BMW 3-series and I saw this in some magazine in the late 1980s I'd think twice.

I see they had to choose the "e" model BMW to compare against. These models had a longer stroke and slower engine speeds to increase efficiency while retaining horsepower. Torque suffered however.
Anyone else think "No Pilot's License Required" would have been a much better tagline for SAAB than its current one?

The "e" used a 2.7 liter engine instead of the 325i's 2.5

The e actually had slightly more torque but significantly less horsepower. It was designed for fuel economy, the i was the sporty model. The 325i would probably be faster than the Volvo.

And what the hell is 0 to "legal speed"? 55?

I though about that myself. Even at 0-55 6.7 sec. is pretty good.

Possibly... but I reckon you'd go back to the BMW dealer after driving one. We had a 1987 Volvo 740 Turbo, which is now our grandfather's, and despite the turbo, it wasn't really that good to drive. The steering was terrible, much worse than any 3-series from that era, and the turbo didn't kick in until 3000 rpm. But, hey, my parents bought it because "it was safe."

Well, it IS true, back in those days before Ford came along Volvo was in the forefront of Safety.
They also did a lot of fraudulent advertising to 'reinforce' that image, don't forget.

Which models did you feel were over ratede safety wise?

I know that like any other advertisement liberal use of exageration for effect is used but I think the old school Volvos were decent cars for the money. MIddle class people could afford a mid size 240, now these days Volvo sells over glorified Fords and charges a fortune. (again I'm generalising)
A more accurate statement would be that Ford is selling underglorified Volvos.

I guess... I read the magazines, I just don;t agree the propaganda reflects reality.
